We got a pfd for our dog and it doesn't' bother him one bit. He is only 8 months and it took a little bit for him to get use to jumping in the water off the boat, but he has it down now. Only problem we have is he tries to dry himself off on the seats and put a few light scratches in them. Where it appears a little lighter in color than the rest in the seat. So we just put some towels on the seats while swimming and make sure he stays off the seats.
And on the subject of life jackets when I take my younger cousins out on the boat 15 and 17 they both were there life jackets the whole time. Only thing you could do is bring it to his attention and keep your kids off of his boat.
