Just wanted to verify that the trim/tilt fluid is actually power steering fluid and you check it with the power steering fluid container.

I saw this so I thought I might be correct since I have searched all over the engine looking for a separate pump and I can't find one. Thanks for the help 8)
BTW at almost 80 dollars for that small container is there another alternative since it says power steering fluid and that would probably be less than 10 dollars at the parts store.

That's the right fluid, but the trim has a separate reservoir. On yours it should be down on the drive itself.

Crikey why would they put it on the drive! It seems someone at Four Winns should go back to engineering school. How are you supposed to know if it has the correct amount of fluid or not unless it has some kind of dipstick that you can check. Thanks for the help I will have to check into that tomorrow.

Actually it's a Volvo thing, not FW - but I agree, that's one of the stupidest design decisions I've ever seen.

Going to finish my fun fun duoprop removal project which has turned into hell on earth thanks to that inner prop before I take on the future project of outdrive cover removal and tilt/trim fluid check. The drive is working just fine other than not showing the correct all down on the display.

Have you always purchased the OEM Volvo Penta power steering fluid or have you used something else? Cheaper :lol:

I've only bought the VP, and since I've only needed to buy a quart of it, it was painless. But it's just GM power steering fluid, which is probably also the same as Dexron 2 or 3 transmission fluid. If you want cheap & easy, go with the GM power steering fluid.

Just curious - did you get the owner's manuals with your boat? Some of these things would be discussed there. Not trying to discourage questions though. :)

LOL! I actually didn't get the manual and that is a perfect item that I didn't even think on purchasing go figure. Going to order from Four Winns tomorrow, going to google and see what I find chime in if you have a shortcut to getting that manual. Thanks I just found a PDF format manual and I am happy to know that the outdrive oil needs to be replaced at 200 hours I thought way sooner than that. My boat is at 180 hrs so I am on schedule.

The VP drive runs much cooler than the mercs...that's why you see many people adding drive showers on the mercs to help keep it cool. That helps prevent oil degradation also, but regardless of what the book says I would never wait 200 hours to swap drive oil. The oil is way cheaper than drive repair and is an easy change.

Personally, i swap the drive oil along with the motor oil every year. Did this on my prior boat which was a merc and continue with the VP. Most of my hours involve watersports which means a lot of nuetral to drive shifts and heavy throttle out of the hole. I also will pull the top check stick after every time out just to make sure oil looks clean and water free...a couple times a year i will loosen the lower plug to make sure no water leaks out. This only takes a minute.

When you get the props off - make sure to wipe some marine oil on the spline - next time the props will slide right off. IT's the blue oil (forget name) but a tube of it is cheap.

I have all my boat manuals as pdf's as much quicker and convenient than hunting out paper copies (which I do have). I simply print off a particular page if I want it.

I downloaded soft copies from FW, VP, TieDown (for the trailer), Clarion for the stereo, ICOM for the VHF radio, Faria for the depth sounder, plus single sheets like parts lists fo rthe engine, outdrive etc. Works for me! :lol:

Sounds good I have printed a couple of pages for the future outdrive project, right now I am soaking the prop to see if I can get it out tomorrow morning. Wish me luck with this crazy prop! This is what I think of you damn screw and prop :lol:

:lol: LMAO!! That is a good one I will show this one to my friends at work! Just a note the red is spraypaint I used on the throttle body I was gentle with the prop lol!
