Good idea on the M5's - i hadnt thought of that and had been planning on finding some stainless phillip heads at the hardware store next go round. It is amazing they use flat heads - the hex head drive would work if the screw head wasn't so close to the housing - the m5 head would be a no brainer.

On the impeller - make sure you bend the blades opposite of the direction the impeller spins....in other words if it rotates clockwise the blades need to be bent to facing counter-clockwise. this prevent crushing of the fins when it first starts to spin.

I got this late and didn't do that but I filled it with glycerine and turned it on and it ran great and held the temp at 170 when it warmed up. Should I take it off and check it and reinstall the way you are saying since it's so easy to do? M5 screws going to check into what those are. Maybe I will change them while I am checking it or should I let it be since it was running fine.

If it's cooling well, my vote is to leave it be until next maintenance.

The M5 screws Graham referred to are just 5mm socket head (hex head) screws to replace those slotted brass ones. Like this:

I've been planning to do the same but haven't gotten around to it yet.

Ok it stays put since everything is cooling fine and I have the used impeller which actually appeared to be in perfect condition in my spare parts bag I plan to take on the boat and the tools to change on the water if need be. Do you have a spare parts bag and tools if you do what do you bring along? This is what I have in my bag , I have a complete set of hoses and new clamps, Impeller and o-ring, serpentine belt, motor oil 1 quart, power steering fluid small container, extra drain plug, and a pretty big set of fuses, my IR temp reader, emergency puncture repair puddy and a dive mask and snorkel and underwater light and a sharp knife. And last but not least a brand new roll of duct tape, if it saved Apollo 13 it might just save me too  Do you carry anything else I might be missing? Those screws would definitely make the impeller change a breeze.

That's a pretty good kit, better than most. What I take on the boat:

Quart of oil
Quart of steering & trim fluid
Battery jumper pack, even though I have dual batteries - it might save me from having to tow someone else
My tool bag, which contains:
Spare impeller kit
Prop wrench
Muffs
10-in-one screwdriver
Spare plug
Spare deck key
8" Crescent wrench
Full socket set with SAE & metric, 1/4" & 3/8", with extensions & u-joints
A tool roll with a full set of wrenches, Allen wrenches, pliers, cutters & utility knife
Snap ring pliers with various tips for inside & outside rings
A full roll of vinyl electrical tape (for temporary repairs only)
Tube of dielectric grease
Couple of tubes of Volvo blue grease
Spare LED's for the helm
A bunch of spare fuses
Scotch Brite pad (hell, who knows what for - it fit in one of the pockets :) )
SureFire G2 light with SF batteries
Rechargeable 12V floodlight

Also, my cell phone, with all the BoatUS phone numbers and the BoatUS Android App.
VHF handheld, which will probably never serve a purpose in my area.

I think that's all.

Next year I'm adding a hernia belt for use after I lift all that crap into the boat.

LOL @ Mike - you'll need a bigger boat soon just for the tool kit! But some good ideas all the same.

I have a basic set of metric & impeial open end spanners, cresent wrench, screwdrivers, duct tape, insulating tape, WD40, allen keys, fuses, impeller, spark plugs, prop nut, spark plugs and sockets to suit, spare key for the boat, drain bung, cable ties. I also have the adapter to undo my ford trailer wheel nuts with my Chev wheel wrench - learned this the hard way!

Alec's post reminded me of a few more.

Spare rear prop nut (since I normally have a prop lock installed)
Keys for the prop lock and the drive lock
Zip ties

In the truck, I keep these, in case of theft:

Spare 7-round to 5-flat adapter
Spare pin for the swing-away tongue

When we go on a long trip, I also take these:

A spare trailer hub already packed with new bearings, races & seal.
A spare F5 prop set.

OK, that's all. I think.

as far as replacing hoses, I smear a little marine grease on the metal neck it fits on, so that they don't get rusted in place and be a pain to remove next fall when you winterize it again....salt water corrodes and hoses get stuck on...

No need to remove impeller - once it is cranked the fins will flip over the right way anyhow...it's just a little something to keep from adding any stress to the rubber fins during that first crank up. It's fine - just a little something to keep in mind next go round.

As far as the tool kit - beer, ice, extra beer, ohhhh and oil and funnel, spare key and plug and electrical tape and duct tape. As far as tools (allen wrench set and a leatherman tool). That's about all i take.

I did exactly what you did on the mouth of the hoses I figured they could rust in place also. Thanks for all the help the service on these engines with the right book and a little elbow grease is actually not that hard to do on your own. Considering you don't have to drive it to work you can always get help if your screw something up or forget how to put something back the way it was. As for me I take lots of pictures before I take anything apart and I also have the book for the engine although the book is for an older model engine it has helped with many things so far. Yes cold beer and a radio with some music and a friend that likes boats also but doesn't have one helps on yours is great!
