Here's some progress. Not nearly done, but functioning....

Powered by an Asus p7h77-m, Intel Ivy Bridge i5-3470, 8GB GSkill DDR3 1600, Evga GTX560, Patriot Pyro SE 120gb SSD, WD Black 1TB 7200rpm, 600w modular power supply.

Coming soon: More case modification to better hide the wires, lining the inside with sound deadening and liquid cooling the CPU.

Everyone's all crazy about modern black cases with LED lights and what not. I figured I'd pay homage to our roots :)

Yup, you need a boat indeed.....

Nice setup you have there though. I just built myself a new desktop after christmas.... somewhat similar. I7 2700K sandy bridge, 8Gb gskill 1600 memory, 120 Gb Crucial M4 SSd, Cool-IT eco liquid for the CPU and a AMD FirePro V4900 for my Solidworks software. And yeah, I did a windowed case with the LED lighting..... :P All on a ASUS P8P67 Motherboard.

To keep the threat boating related.... Craigslist boat listings should load up awefully quick when you are searching on that hardware...

Good catch Chris, and here I thought Ric was just trying to do anything to keep his mind off his boatlessness blues. Now I see that he built a faster puter so he can browse boat ads even faster!

I check all classifieds 3 times a day. Am, lunch, and around 8pm. It's hooked up to two 22" 1080p LED monitors (one is an HDTV on cable, just in case)

And no it's not fast enough. Going to order a 2nd 120gb SSD so I can do a RAID0. 530mb/s isn't fast enough, I want to break the 1000Mb/s mark on HDD speed. I have a tiny USB 3.0 thumbdrive that is faster then any spinning hard drive i've ever seen, it transfers around 150mb/s

I'm pleased with the HDD throughput of my Crucial M4 (the M4 is a bit slower than some, but rock solid performance), my hangup with Solidworks was core speed. Solidworks is all about a fast single core.... So, that was my reason for the 2700K i7. Easy overclocking to around the 5 Ghz mark makes for some great performance when modeling.

Yeah some people get too bent up over how many cores they have when most apps only use 1, 2 at most. That 2700k is amazing!! I only went with the Ivy because well... bragging rights. I do nothing but administer phone servers via web pages. Total overkill.
