That thermostat didnt "become one" with the housing - theres a rubber o-ring that needs to be removed before you can get the thermostat out. I can see it in the picture, although its rust stained from the surrounding metal.

Yea, figured that out...slow learning curve for me :)

Any thoughts on covering the outdrive for the winter? leave it out to breath?

You should remove it to inspect the bellows, U-Joints, gimble bearing, driveshaft, etc. I removed mine and put it in my garage, then covered where it used to be with plastic, but with a hole in the bottom of the plastic to allow air in so no moisture can form.

If you leave the drive on, try to put it down so water does not pool in the exhaust cavity behind the prop because that can crack the housing, or you can cover it with a plastic bag. I take mine off and store it in the garage over the winter.

Well, got it finished. Fluids changed, winterized and shrink weapped, impeller replaced, stereo rewired and a few other minor laundry list items done. $235 in parts, $1,300 in labor...ouch.

Flowers or a box of candy would have been nice.

What is the hourly rate? Here mechanics in the marine biz charge around 115/hr the last time I looked when I buy parts at the local shop. If you do it right it does take a while.

I really don't think that it's bad considering all they did. Because I sold the truck, $250 of that was to drive an hour to the lake and haul it back an hour to the shop. $550 of it was the shrink wrap and winterization that includes storage for the winter. The last couple years I've had a guy come to the lake and winterize there and keep it in dry dock. I needed it picked up for some work he does not do. Next year I think I'll shrink wrap myself though.

Well, you left out quite a few things in your initial post about what you paid for...

If all those things are included, it wasn't anywhere near $1,300 in 'labor' as you previously said.

You might consider getting a nice custom winter cover if you're going to keep that boat a long time, you will start saving money after 2 winters worth most likely. Shrink is good for snow but if you build a support frame like I did the custom cover can work well and is much cheaper over time.
