Every detector I've seen is of the waterproof variety.

They had a big discussion about this on the chap forums... not the unit but the little sensor.

Just put the sensor in a place where water won't drip on it.

Maintenance on those are pretty freaking heavy.

Like what? None of my clients have ever asked me to look into their vapor detectors.

Yep!

I the bigger question that no one has asked! When was the last time the fluids were checked? And how many hours was that in between?

I do that all the time, but only put 3 or 4 hours between checking.

Well, I did all this 3 weeks ago:

1. Took out the rear bench seat to get full access to the engine.
2. Removed raw water pump, and rebuilt it with new SST bearing and seal.
3. Change the Circulating pump because it is 13 years old.
4. Replaced the Manifolds and Risers.
5. Changed the spark plugs.
6. Changed Engine Oil & Filter
7. Changed Fuel Filter and inspected for water (none).
8. Changed Drive and checked for water (none).
9. Checked Trim and PS fluid levels
10. Replaced V-belts
11. Cleaned bilge.
12. Install new Polk Audio speakers in the aft side panels.
13. Re-installed rear bench seat.

2 weeks ago I put 7 hours on the engine, and checked fluids / leaks several times.

No need, the fumes from our Cocker Spaniel need no fancy detectors; I've never known a dog with such "delicate" bowels The only solution is to drive faster ( leaving the fumes behind)

Now that is too funny,

Not funny when it happens (accompanied by a playful wag of his impressive tail), believe me !

We do have a gas/ petrol detector with the sensor in the engine bay by the way, it was clearly not designed to detect the fragrant part of the output of his chemistry set.
