Yes, the day off the full bilge, I was rafted up to another boat and I had to do a lot of reversing due to a 15 knot wind continually blowing me towards shore. I never use reverse except for an occasional "bump" at the dock. I am thinking that using reverse so much, and at a higher rpm, and for a longer period of time than I ever have, and pulling another boat alongside me, may have caused a separation.

Any pics? It was gorgeous here today. Water in the bay was 75, calm, nice 5-10kt wind...absolutely perfect beach day with the family and jumping off the platform. Makes living here worth it!

Sorry, no pics.... I always forget to snap some pics when a day goes so smooth and everyone is enjoying life.

Iirc I think there are six nuts in the transom mount two on top to on the bottom and two in the middle. I hit a log a couple of summers ago and also had water fill the bilge and at that time was unaware my bilge pump did not work good thing the admiral was still parked on the ramp when I realized it. You also my want to check your drive alignment. I usually check my transom nuts every year now.

Ahhhh, don't tell me that. If there are 2 in the middle, they are extremely well hidden. I should get out a schematic and make sure. Gonna rain today, so guess I'll be doin a little researchin'...

.

Between the broken belt, and the loose bolts, the answer is obvious...

Must have been Gremlins!

^ Haaaaaa....that's what I looked like after 2 hours behind the engine.

Well, I poured over the schematics, and could not find a definitive one that actually showed 6 bolts on the inner transom plate. I will def give it another look this week though, as it is forecast to be high 70's and sunshine for the weekend, so I might just spend the night on the boat! But I wanna make sure there is nooooo more drip drip drip.

The drawings I have looked at never showed the middle nuts but I assure you they are there behind the up pipes for the exhaust. The service manual on boat info web site show them and need to be tightened in a cross pattern to 25ft lbs. when I get home I will post the website. Don't make me fly across the US and tighten them for you

The old OMC Cobra transom design that was modified for the joint venture product definitely had 6 studs/nuts for the transom mount. I have never tried to tighten mine but also have not had a leak yet either, good thing as mine's on a mooring 6 months out of the year. Looking at them, I think a short crowfoot wrench might make it easier like the distributor wrenches we use to loosen the dist hold down on both Chevy and Ford V-8s, still have mine from the '70s lol.....

http://www.crowleymarine.com/johnson-ev ... /56708.cfm

you see here, part # 61 you need 4 of, part # 69 you need 2 of (I'm guessing that the studs are different lengths)=6 studs total. If you look inside the transom mount on the outside with the drive turned to one side you can see the 3 bosses on each side that the studs screw into.

Ya know, I see those all the time when I service/remove/install the drive, but I'll be danged if I can spot them from the inside!

I'm gonna give a look see this week and find em! I promise to "try" and take some pics, but it is such close quarters, might not work out.

Whatever you do, make sure you check the drive alignment ASAP. I'm sure it changed, and the last thing you want to do is to have to pull the engine to replace a coupler that burned up due to misalignment.

Ok, update. I crawled and looked all behind the engine and could NOT find the middle bolts/nuts that were mentioned above. I found this schematic of my transom plate tho:
Image

Red arrows indicate upper bolts and lower nuts. These have been tightened. But, as you can see, there is no indication of any nuts/bolts in the middle. I know several of you have said that they are there, but I have felt, looked, and felt again and nothing. The last resort is to remove the exhaust pieces.
