Are there any good companies to contact to get quotes?

For umbrella liability, talk to the same agent you have your homeowner's through. For boat insurance, BoatUS is one marine specialty company with a very good reputation. In many cases they are not the cheapest, but they're a great organization and I've never heard of anyone having a claim problem with them.

Without commiting slander, there are some companies who look to deny claims and others who don't look as hard.

From what I recall Safeco, and CNA were the best ones I worked with.

Fortunately I never have to claim anything for boating yet. (Go a head, tell me I do not boat enough!) I had coverage with United Marine Underwriter for 8 years. Few people said they do not have good luck with AMU. so I switched to BoatUS for last 3 years. It is easy to review policy so you can see what exactly covered. I also heard good thing about Progressive as well. Other than my boat, I have 5 other different insurance policies based on the location and use of properties. (Winter home in ME, Summer Home in NY, Primary Home in MA, Auto insurance, Classic Car Insurance) However, I have a personal umbrella liability policy with same insurance company on my primary residence to cover all properties (cars and boats as well). I would strongly recommend for umbrella policy if you have multi insurance policies.
It is not an expensive policy to add.

Paul, I didn't think it was slander if it was the truth

I forgot to say, BoatUS is underwritten by CNA. In addition to providing the insurance, BoatUS also works hard for boater's rights, waterway access, boater education, etc. They also have very good coverage available for towing breakdowns. Many are members of the organization even if they don't insure their boats through them.

I don't think anyone is calling your agent incompetent-just trying to make sure you've covered all the bases.

Yep, it's always good to have an agent that you trust. But trust only goes so far when claims are required. You don't want to get caught out, for whatever reasons. Plenty of times people get lazy, assume things or just honestly make mistakes. But none of those help you when you're in a jam facing ineffective coverage (or worse, none). Good luck reviewing the policy, reading mine gave me a headache.

I reread my policy this christmas vacation and discovered that I have more than double the state requirements. We also have full coverage replacement for the first 2 years and depreciation after that. Everything you guys said is good advice. BTW why isnt my boat covered in the event of a nuclear situation?

That's a good question. I'm going to have to review MY policy now, too. The last thing I want in a "nucular" situation is to be boatless.

Maybe this is too personal a question, but I gotta ask... what is everyone paying for insurance?

I'm with Safeco... a 2008 Horizon 240... Insured up to full MSRP retail of 70k... 250 deductible... then you add liability and uninsured watercraft coverage and I'm at 626/year.

Is that a fair rate, or am I getting ripped?

My '18 1992 Maxum, $250 was at $300 per year. I believe the new boat is at $450 for $50k??? I still have the old one on the same policy, so not certain yet with just the FW.

hope that helps.

Cougar, is that for an agreed value policy, or is it subject to depreciation?

Subject to your answer to Mike's question, cougar, I'd say you're in about the same neighborhood as I am. I think I'm in the mid-500's for comparable coverage (a little less in value as my boat costs/is worth less than yours).

Oh, and yeah - my policy is agreed value. However, it is up to me to "lower" the value as the market value of the boat decreases over time. Not a big issue for the first year or two, but a couple years down the road when the boat is "worth" 40k.... I would have to prove why the boat is still worth 70k...

But then, paying 70k worth of insurance on a boat that is only 40k doesn't make much sense anyway.

Bottom line, every year or two you adjust the value down according to market conditions.

But if something happens and the boat is a total loss, yes - I get a check for full agreed value.

In that case I'd say your policy is priced very competitively. I'm paying a bit more than that (I honestly can't recall exactly how much at the moment), but it's a no-questions-asked agreed value policy with no depreciation for total loss and no used parts, etc., used on partial losses. Being the first new boat we've owned, I wanted to be covered to the max for the first couple of years. I've been planning to take another look at it this year or next, though.

Don't forget that one item in the equation of insurance cost is your cruising area and length of season. For me, it's inland and coastal with coastal being limited to 75 miles offshore. Florida has a tendency to be a bit higher. Cost for me at an agreed upon value of 100K is $960 /yr.
