I'm going to miss you in the Horizon threads. I guess you can graduate to the Vista threads now eh?

That's a Ford engine with the dog clutch Cobra drive....

I believe it's actually a cone clutch model. The F-N-R gear set is in the top of the drive. This drive looks very similar to a Volvo Penta SX Cobra. It currently shifts very smooth without the motor running so we will have to see once I get her fired up.

Awesome find! Even if you have to put a motor and outdrive in there, I think you could probably pull that off for 6k and still be a tad ahead of the game for value. Glad I didn't run across that one, my wife already yells at me for the 'good deals' that I find all the time

I am hoping that it just needs alot of TLC. The guy actually kept very good care of her. He told my Dad he spent 5-7K in the last two years on canvas and mechanics. When the trim cylinder failed, he'd had enough (His marina quoted him near $100 to replace it). Keep looking there are deals everywhere especially now.

Good snag on the boat!! I built the same play structure for our boys and you probably have the same amount of money in that as you do the new boat??

I love impulse buying!!! I might have to go looking for some rock......................

Your exactly right about play structure vs boat cost. I might even have a little more in the structure. the damn package said 5-10 hours for assembly and I would be willing to bet I am closer to 40 !!! But I did have to do all the work myself sans helper except for the 4 1/2 year old   Hopefully she'll remember these times later when she's fifteen and hates me :)

I'm not going anywhere yet! My luck is I will be a two boat owner for awhile yet.

This came from right around your next of the woods! If I had gone to get it we could have hooked up. Sorry we couldn't get together this summer but definitely next year.

That's interesting....if you look in the parts catalogs on both dougrussell.com and crowleymarine.com...a 1993 5.8 definitely has the dog cluctch Cobra...if it does have a cone clutch drive (not flat across the top of the upper unit...the top on those has a hump) then the boat has to be a 94 because that's when the joint venture Volvo SX/OMC Cobra started production....which would make it worth a lot more because you can still get parts for those and they can be serviced at a Volvo shop....

Lou Thanks for the info. Here's some pictures:
The Drive

The Drive ID Tag

The Boat Serial No.

I am having a real hard time finding any info on the 1993 King Cobra drives....I wonder if this one has been changed to something newer. The tag on the outdrive makes no sense at all and the serial definitely refers to a 93. Maybe this was a late year production unit and got the newer drive system?

I ran into a major problem last night! The motor seems to be seized. The starter only clicks and then pops some automatic re-setting breaker and we are struggling to even turn it over by hand! I sprayed PB Blaster down all the cylinders and will go over it again this weekend but it looks like a new motor is in order.

Marc to the best of my knowledge...this is the cone clutch drive that preceeded the joint venture Volvo SX Cobra/OMC Cobra...it was a much more heavy duty drive than the dog clutch models...with cone clutch shifting and if you compare the size of this to the dog clutch Cobras...it's much bigger and the parts are completely different...so first we had the dog clutch Cobra...1986-1993...used with 4 cyl...V-6...small V-8...and with a bigger lower unit from the V-8 OMC outboards...used on the Big Block Ford 460 (86-89).
Then in 1990...OMC came out with the one on your boat...but it was used with the Chev 454 mostly...I went and looked at dougrussell.com and the 5.8 King did use this drive....the 5.8 regular used the dog clutch model..... This much bigger cone clutch drive was built from 90-93...not much is known about them...but look at the parts diagrams on dougrussel.com and crowleymarine.com. Having an older OMC I was not aware that this drive was used with the Ford engine...
if the motor won't turn...I'd remove the drive first to make sure the upper unit isn't locked up....that could keep the engine from cranking....

I have only seen one other boat with that drive and it was a beautiful 1990 or 91 FW Liberator with a 454...

Thanks Lou for the info. This boat does have a four barrell carb and I believe it is rated at 265 HP. I have Seloc manual that came with the boat but it seems to focus more on the dog clutch units... I have yet to do a thorough review of the manual though.

There's not much to say... Well lots but I can't type fast enough.

I noticed this boat on Ebay when it only had 15 minutes left to go and it was way undervalued at $1100. I reviewed the pictures and the listing quickly and determined in my own mind that a "deal" could be had here. By the time I had reviewed the boat made a decision and added my max bid there was 5 minutes left. I was the current high bidder at $1326 due to proxy bidding. I guess previous high bidder must have been sitting there watching the auction close when he realized I had bumped him! He waited until the final minute to enter another bid and proxy took over flipping between us until I had beat his max bid and then the auction ended! In hindsight I wish I had waited for the last minute to put in my bid because I would have saved another $500. Here are the listing pictures:

http://s262.photobucket.com/albums/ii100/millhaven_nice_guy/1993%20FW%20Vista%20245/

Dealing with the consignor was a horrible experience. I immediatley paid a deposit by Paypal and he responded with a phone number. I contacted him and got information to send him a bank draft. I sent it two days after the auction closed and he recieved it the next day (Wednesday). I contacted him on Thursday and he said that he had received it but not taken it to his bank yet! I gave him shit because it was the Labour Day long weekend and my guys (Dad and Brother) were leaving the following Friday to go get the boat plus I had to deliver my trailer three hours to my Dad's on Sunday and wanted to give him maps etc... so I needed an address for the boat. I thought I was getting the run around and maybe scammed. I sent him some "firm" emails and he finally relinquished an address for the boat. I was able to google the address and the name on the trailer (from the pictures) and they appeared kosher so I felt a bit better but still didn't have a scan of the Title or the Bill of Sale! On the following Wednesday I contacted him because I still had nothing and he told me he would have to contact his bank to see if my funds "cleared" I again gave him shit saying he was holding up the process and he said he would check and get back to me! He didn't call back! I called him agian and got his wife or girlfriend instead (apparently he was driving and couldn't answer the phone) He confirmed that the funds had cleared and he would mail the Tile and Bill of Sale to me. Well I lost it on that poor girl that was relaying the information! I needed the Title and Bill of Sale in order to get the boat imported and due to his BS, he would have to get the paperwork back to the boat for when my dad and Brother arrived to pick it up...He agreed.

Story continued...

On September 11, 2009 my Dad and Brother left at 5 am to go get the boat. Due to tides they needed to be there around 4 pm and it was an 8 hour drive minus any stops or delays. It was arranged that they would meet at the seller's house and then take the boat three miles to the ocean to transfer trailers. I received a call from the consignor saying the boat would be at the public launch alredy because the owner had been called into work. He gave me a different address which I relayed to the truck. At 4:15 I received a phone call saying the truck hadn't shown yet. I contacted them and they had bee held up in traffic their GPS said 5:15 arrival. Made this report to the consignor, He said he would wait. They arrived, loaded the boat , collected the paperwork and only got a few words out of the owner because it was pouring rain and he needed to get to work (already late) He did mention that he had spent between $5-7 K on the boat in the last couple of years and he did not want to put anymore into it. They are not boater's, didn't know what to ask so nothing more got relayed!!! I received a phone call saying the baot was loaded and that it looked real good from the outside and the inside looked fairly nice too.... This I knew from the listing pictures though. They were headed to find a hotel for the night and dry out (Not really because they racked up a big enough bar tab!!!)

Saturday they headed towards home until about 3:00 pm when they blew a tire on my trailer and decided to stay the night in Syracuse so It would be light when they were coming across the border on Sunday. It was set that I would meet them their at 11 am.

Sunday They were late to show up at the border(12:15) i went in and did all the paperwork, paid my taxes and then thye decided to inspect the boat! The border guard could not believe that I had paid so little. He consulted Autotrader and Yachtworld and came up with nothing even close. I had to log on to Ebay and show him my winning bidder's notification so he would believe me eventhough I had a Bill of Sale! After 1.5 hours we were allowed to leave. I took the boat home and my Dad and Brother headed for Ottawa.

Finally got back on to this project this past weekend! I managed to pull the motor and get it off my buddy's trailer and on to the ground.

Prepping the motor to be removed only took about an hour! But my back is still aching from all the weird angles and positions. Basically you just remove the outdrive first then remove four nuts, disconnect all the wires and hoses and you are ready to go!

We maneuvered the beast in to place below the biggest branch of my trusty front yard tree.

Image

Image

Here she is coming out past the floor. We found it easier if we twisted the motor in the bilge first.

Image

The motor's above the freeboard so it was time to pull out the boat!

Image

Triumph !!!!

Image

The motor is semi seized (It's verrrry hard to turn over) and the oil pan was really rotten so I guess I am going to have to look for a refurbished long block motor and oil pan at the least. I will know more as I start messing with the motor in my shop.

Image

We then proceeded to unload her from my buddy's trailer. This didn't take as long as I figured eventhough we were unsure of how to do it and didn't want anybody to get hurt or the boat to get damaged!

We first pulled the boat back on the trailer bunks in my driveway so we had a about 5 ft overhanging the bunks. Then we moved it where I wanted to store it and started slowly pulling with the tractor and truck until it was off the trailer and on some blocks! Took us about two hours total.

Almost Off!!

Now I just have to finish the domestic water witerization, pull the batteries and then tarp her up for the long wait until spring.
