What grinds me is paying full insurance on a boat that is not being used!! We have two boats, one that we bought this year, and one for sale. Has not seen the water, and is sitting on the trailer. Still paying $500 a year for the thing not to even move!! Not a lot of chance of damage when it isn't being used!!

+1 on the confusion mode. Should not be mad at the insurance company, you do not have to leave full coverage on a boat that is in storage unless you are in over your head on it, and the bank requires full coverage. (Unlikely) Storage insurance is maybe 1/3 what full coverage is. If you are worried about damage in sea trialing the boat, I would not let a potential buyer drive it without you on board anyway, thus limiting any damage by said potential buyer.

Maybe the anger is directed towards the people that are not buying their 2nd boat. Image

Something I have always lived by, FWIW. If you can only afford one boat at a time, DO NOT buy a second boat until the 1st boat is sold.

Huh, that's exactly what my wife kept telling me a month or so ago, I guess I'm a bit more of a risk taker. But that means you have to go boat less for awhile and who wants to do that?

Also I reminded her that when we bought our house 9 years ago we hadn't yet sold our previous one, and i didn't remember her saying that back then

It always seems to work out

Affording it is not the problem, what I'm upset about is the fact, our insurance company would not let us put storage rates on the boat. We were told to either keep the insurance that was on the boat or cancel it all together.
It all worked out in the end. Just the insurance company squeezing that last extra dime out of you.

Hi

I am very HAPPY with Progressive Ins. Great rates & service!! BoatUS would be my second choice. What I have found that it is a HP to lengh ratio. My 23' boat was more $$ than my 25' boat with the same engine. The reasoning was that the 23' boat could go faster and do more damage, even thought the 25" boat cost more.

I get my boat insurance from a marine broker here that gives good service....

In reference to the 'farm' comment.....
I had State Farm for the house, for 18 years. Had one claim (pipe leaked in a winter freeze) in all that time. When the insurance companies got all skittish about hurricanes back in 92 after Andrew they got away with the windstorm exclusion (like a collision deductible, you are responsible for the first 5% damage if we get a named storm more than 75 mph winds for more than an hour). Still even with that, they started dropping anyone less than 1/4 mile from the water. We are 370 feet from a harbor that feeds into LI Sound, but the true coast line is at least 2 miles from here. Our property is elevated at least 80 feet above sea level. STILL, they dropped us. We had to go with a company that does coastal properties a for a lot more money. The last named serious hurricane we got here on Long Island was Gloria. That was in 1985....I know it could always happen, but still...these companies gave up a lot of premiums, to avoid this risk.

My experience with State Farm: Had them for over 30 years for homes, boats, and cars; had several claims, one on a boat, several on cars, and about $8,000 on my home. I get great service from a local agent whom I can talk to face to face and reasonable rates from the company. But I am a lake boater over 200 miles from the NC coast. As an old banker with many customer's beach homes, I know it is a different world for insurance on the coast because of the risk of enormous losses!
