Most radios are not powered through the ignition switch. Mainly because you'd want to listen to the radio without the engine running. There's usually a breaker specifically for the radio on the panel.
Most radios require two sources of power. One for the main supply and the other to preserve the station memory and other settings. The accessory wire is usually power FROM the radio, NOT to the radio. This allows you to power on other devices when the radio comes on. Like a power antenna in a car, or a separate amplifier. An amp requires it's own power though, the line from the radio is just a signal for the amp to switch itself on. There may also be a third line for illumination. In an auto that gets power whenever the dashboard lights are turned on.
I would not put power into that red wire. If it's what I think it is, you'd be putting power back into the radio on the wrong side of the circuit. As in, not protected by the fuse. Be *sure* the fuse is good. If it is then you have something wrong with that radio.
I did actually put power back on that red wire temporarily via the yellow wire, just to see what happened. when I made that connection, the radio came on. The illumination wire you speak of is an orange and white stripe wire that has never been connected. I think because this radio was factory wired in the cuddy, maybe they didnt need to power for allumination?? Either way, sending 12v to that wire on the back of the radio, made the thing work. That wire does have a 1 amp in line fuse on it. I will make sure to reuse that in line fuse when I rerun the 12v to the radio. That way it should be protected. The wiring diagram on this radio is a little confusing, also why wouldnt they have connected the illumination wire? It clearly has never been connected.
