I disagree - the trailer more than likely is being used. A crook doesn't care about reporting actual vin number and getting a license tag. Here all they need to do is get trailer tags as a homemade boat trailer and they have plates. They can restamp the vin so it doesn't come back registered to anyone/anything. Or destroy vin and slap a sticker over it and stamp their own owner applied number to the trailer.

Kindof hard for a police officer to read a vin running down the road. Most don't even know where the vin stamp on various trailers are located. It's a common problem with all trailers.

I forgot about other states, but than again, we are talking about Canada! Here in Mass, that is not how it works. Any home made trailer, needs to be inspected by the RMV. More for safety, but also to see if it is stolen. No re-stamping in this state. If the trailer is under $3000, you don't need a title, but you can ask for one. Over that, you need a title unless it is over 20yrs old. In some states, the trailer has Ins. from the towing vehicle. In Mass, the trailer must be insured & registered.

I know this is OFF the subject, but I do find it interesting, how other states work.

Here you just need to walk in and say you have a homemade trailer, pay the 26.00 and you have a title and plates. Boat and utility trailers here seldom are even registered here, under a certain length you dont need plates if its for private use. My FW trailer has a sticker with the VIN, I havent found it stamped anywhere else but I would hope it is.

Quite a few trailers are stolen around here since most arent even titled or registered. especially aluminum ones that get cut up and scrapped.

No dolloars $$$$ In other words, is it worth having a title. At least, thats what they told me when I took ownership, at the RMV. There is also a fee to have one made up.

The RMV website:
If the total gross weight of a trailer - the combined weight of the trailer and its cargo - is 3,000 lbs. or less, no title is required. If the total gross weight of a trailer is 3,001 lbs. or more, a title is required. The gross weight of a trailer is determined by the manufacturer and will appear on the trailer's Certificate of Origin and on the trailer itself.

So it is pounds not dollars!

Ok!! I will take your word on that! It was a few years ago, she must have said pounds and I thought it was dollors.

But, Mass is one of the toughest states on anything with the RMV.

You would be amazed at the restamp these crooks use...we had a crew who would buy trashed motorcycles only to get the title and vin number.....then restamp the frame of a stolen bike to match - - whallllaaaa they have a titled stolen bike. I saw the vin work and was amazed - took more work than just viewing the vin to identify as stolen bike. Same principal for stolen trailers - but they don't even need to get a junk model since all they need here is to title as home-made.

A good officer will catch this since it's obvious these 4W trailers are not home-made. but still he/she needs to ID it as stolen, which is more of a task. For this reason it is good to engrave your state driver's license in several places on the frame. It can help, but odds are not good for recovery.

Here in TX i can go into a title office and get one for a home-made trailer with absolutley zero inspection - don't even need to take a photo of the trailer - it's crazy.
