I have had two pools - older style in ground and the maintenance was tough. Guess i am no chemist either cuz it was either eye burning with chlorine or lime green. I spent much more time cleaning them than swimming. It's a personal use and preference issue for sure, but not for me.

My bro got one and i was there when the salesman showed up....he said the new salt system and water ultraviolet light purifier makes the pool maintenance free. I couldn't hold it in and called him a liar then had to leave. My bro got the pool and guess what - the salesman was a liar.

Keep the boat and downsize the pool:) Kinda ironic - my other bro just bought a house with a pool - his first task was to fill in the pool.

My thoughts are a pool requires year round maintenance whether you use it or not. Most people who have a pool use it a lot initially then after a while hardly ever ( but still maintaning it all the while). If you get tired of the boat you can always sell it.
By the way, you are asking for advice on a boat forum visited by boating nuts
like myself who will usually give a bias in their advice.
Also Summer is just around the corner here in Australia, which means........................ BOATING AND PLENTY OF IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
hope this helps

If you end up going that direction we will more than welcome to take you and family out for ride on our boat… The guys on this forum will be always around for you if you need to escape time to time..

Sushi, no one is pressuring me in the least it is just something I am pondering. Keep in mind I have a large family overall and we entertain at our house quite a bit so I am sure the pool would get lots of use. The boat has suffered this year as I have only put on maybe 20 hours!

Also, thanks for the offer...its great to know there are still good people in the world among all the crazies. The forum members here are great!

I will not be making any rash or hasty decisions and it would not be for at least a year from now anyway.

Slman, where are you located? It's probably listed but I missed it.

Your boat is absolutely awesome in my eyes. You would have to do a Disney type pool to ever top her. What would you ask for the 262?

StirCrazy
Northeast...Hadn't really thought of a price as the decision would be a year off right now but I would guess that $60K would not be out of line.

You could always move closer to the lake!

Seriously.....that distance does make it tough. It's a question only you can answer and do whats right for you.

Funny this topic came up. We just sold our boat and now we are looking at a few different houses that all have pools. One house does have solar panels on the roof used to heat the pool so at least that cost would be covered. We also like to entertain at home and I think a nice deck/pool area would be great for that on those hot summer days.

Don't take this the wrong way, but most of you guys have newer boats, probably don't winterize them yourself, pull drives, rebuild trailers like I have. So looking at it my way, a pool with a nice salt generator, is NOTHING to maintain...
Just to get my boat in the water....there is bottom paint (I refuse to do this, too toxic) and rental of the mooring. Those two items run about 800, then there is the membership to the beach assn for mooring the boat (a bargain at 275 a year). Then there is painting the outdrive, which I do myself because the yard never did it right, and, because the anti fouling paints for alu do not work so great, you have to do it twice! I usually pull it out at the end of July to clean it and repaint. If you don't you have a nasty barnacle farm all over it...TO do it right that's about 150 worth of paint, and takes about a day to two days to do it right, two full coats and letting it dry properly.
The pool, pool guy comes, opens it...200....I adjust salt and chemistry...50-80...then at the end....pool guy closes it...200...rest of the time...check the levels once a week....usually I have to add NOTHING....no comparison....much easier....

owned boats since 1981---grew up w/ both pools and boats....both are fun..ok, boating is "funner"!
Got an 18' above ground pool....kids jump in after a day of boating to wash off the salt water.......I jump in after I mow the lawn....wife floats when no one else is in......total cost of pool, filter, install, elec. etc etc.....about $3500.00 and keeps you just as cool as a $35,000 inground pool--besides around here in the North East, an inground or even above ground pools are not much of a selling point when you go to sell your house.......
above ground pool if you want to get rid of it, just put an add in the paper----"Free Pool!! Must take down".
I would never "get out of boating" to install an expensive pool....but as everyone says it's just personal preference..

They say that once you get a pool, you will use your boat even less. Based on the number of hours you put on her last year, she will never be used so dump the boat and get the pool.

Yeh, but I'm in the salt water minority, you other fresh water guys, have no such issues...
See I am SUPPOSED to have an outboard...this is the price I pay for my stubborness, not wanting to yet give in to the requirement for an ultra expensive but less maintenance modern outboard.
An old marine mechanic once said..." you can have an in (board) or an out (board) but never an in/out (board)...LOL

back to the pool...in my family....pool=happy wife....happy wife=priceless....don't ask how much the pool, retaining walls, etc cost....but happy wife=husband gets to use boat more....see for me it adds up....

Growing up as a kid my parents built a pool. Used it one summer and moved on. Total waste of $$ for them. I don't care if you're a family man. Do what you want to do, don't let the kids run your life. When they get older they can do what they want.

Keep the boat.
