No not too hard to install Peter. Have to remove the cover off the outdrive, disconnect the end of the cable from the linkage, loosen the cable retainer bracket on the outdrive and slide it back, then disconnect from the rear of the hand control lever. Check to see if the cable is attached anywhere under the gunnel as it winds its way through.

Pulled the old shift cable back into the engine compartment. I tied my new cable to the old one and carefully pulled it through to the lever end from the engine. Turned the outdrive left, then fed the new cable through the pipe down to the transom without the seals, nuts etc. It pretty much routed itself with no hassles. Set the lever in neutral, outdrive linkage to neutral and bolted it all up. Put lots of grease around the end of the cable and linkages. I didn't remove my control lever - I managed to get behind to unbolt it. All in all took me a good hour or so.

There is a Volvo document I have called 7797318 Remote Control.pdf which gives some detail, but I only glanced at it. You can get it from here... http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=332899

Let me know if you get stuck... Are you going to do it onsite at St Kilda?

Thanks for that handy information Alec. Ill give it my best shot and see how I go. If not I might have to take it somewhere to get done. I will be doing it on site at St kilda.

Peter,

On the 2004 245 Sundowner, your 2005 one is probably the same, if you undo the 2 screws on the lower edge of the panel that the shifter is fitted to, the whole panel can be lifted up and away.( it basically has 2 brackets on the top, which locate in holes in the fibreglass) This gives very good access to the cable side of the shifter.

Take the big plastic cover off the drive - the one with the "DP" sticker and which is held on by 3 bolts. You should see where the cable is attached.

Thank you to all that helped I went down and put the new cable on today. It shifts so much smoother. The old cable was finished.

Glad it all worked out for you Peter. When I changed my shift cable the other year the difference was dramatic - even from day 1 when I bought the boat new it shifted like crap, now with the Xtreme cable it simply glides!

Did you sort out the outdrive up/down issue??

Its amazing how much better it is. The old was was always so stiff to shift and was hard getting back into neutral. I havent as of yet worked out the issues with that. fingers crossed its all sorted by this weekend.

If nothing happens (i.e. no noise) when trimming the outdrive, check fuses or circuit breakers for the tilt/trim pump...

Alec this may be a stupid question but here is the fuse for the trim. I've looked under the dash and in the engine bay but couldn't seem to find it. Is it on tue actual trim unit in the engine bay?

Fourwinnskiwi it's the joys opening a boat I guess. Something is bound to seize or go wrong when used in salt water and always in direct line of sea spray.

There is a waterproof fuse holder rivetted onto the trim pump bracket close to the relays. I have also heard reference to a circuit breaker, push red button to reset, in the engine compartment; I vaguelly recall seeing it on my 2004 245, but I can't remember where exactly.!

Unless they moved the trim pump on the 2005 mode 245 , it's in a place that seems to get exposed to water; the brackets feet on mine were very rusty after 1 years use of the boat in salt water (bracket removed, primed properly and a couple of coats of high quality black paint applied; seems to have sorted that out, plus I refitted it on 1/2" plasic spacers, so it's not sitting directly on the floor). If your trim pump assembly has been getting wet/ damp there could well be corrosion of the relay and other connectors.

Not sure where it is Peter... on mine the trim pump is on the rear port side on the transom. I suspect there is a fuse or circuit breaker on the pump itself or maybe on the engine where the big harness plugs in.

I think Graham is on the money for the fuse location.

Ok this is the drama I had when I tried to take the boat out on New Years Eve after installing cable without testing boat in water. Reversed the boat off trailer, put it in forward gear but the boat kept going in reverse. Stopped the boat and winched it back on trailer. We checked linkage on the outdrive and discovered that it wasn't going fully in forward gear. Tried to adjust but could not. Can anybody help me. Thanks
