Time for the tech to chime in,,,,

Ric is correct. The spark shield is the only difference between automotive and marine alternators. When I replace a marine alternator or starter I take it to a rebuilder I use and he rebuilds it using the spark shield already existing inside thus keeping the unit J-1171 compliant AKA Coast Guard approved.

I didn't see anyone mention the screen located inside the alternator at the fan/pulley end. Yes it is there, if you are using an automotive rebuilt alternator, you need to dismantle the unit and install the screen inside as well as the rear screen. If you need to take it apart anyway, you might as well dewtermine if the problem is with the stator windings, the rotor windings, or the voltage regulator/brushes and only replace the defective component. I have repaired my alternator a couple of times this way (one time brushes, other time voltage regulator) using delco (GM) parts for the repair.
