Lightning is simple... day or night. Anyone can do it. No need to have cat like reflexes.

Day:
Use ND filter on camera. You'll need a few to adjust for different lighting. F-stop in the 11 range. ISO usually around 100/200. Do some test shots to get the metering right without the lightning in the frame. You should have a nice 1-2 second exposure time now with the ND filter compared to 1/60th or whatever without it. Point camera towards thunderstorm on tripod, set remote to continuous shots, have a big memory card, and let 'er rip. Make sure to turn off long exposure noise reduction. It just wastes time. Just sit back and watch the show. Oh.. don't forget to stop taking pictures if there's no activity LOL!

Night:
Same... but you may or may not need an ND filter.

Sometimes you'll need to under-expose the shot cause when you get pictures of the lightning if it's really bright stuff it can blow the picture out. I normally use a few filters stacked on each other... ND, ND grad (so the clouds are not too blown out but the ground is exposed right), and Polarized. OH, and don't get cheap ebay stuff. I tried that once, the ND wasn't color neutral, all my pictures came out purple hahahaha. Filters are a must, you can't re-create these things in Photoshop.

That sounds way too complicated for me Rick as I'm definitely not a photographer. I'm just a guy with a point and shoot and my reflexes are more sloth like than cat.

No, but now it is :)

I'm a wedding photographer sometimes (one of my businesses), so I understand what Ric said.

A neutral density filter is used to reduce the light entering the lens. Think of it as a really dark filter. A correct exposure is a combination of two things, aperture (how wide the iris of the lens opens to expose the sensor), and shutter speed. how long the shutter stays open to expose the sensor.

Since you are limiting the light with the ND filter, the shutter can stay open longer, and hence, its open when the lightning strikes. The problem with doing this is you get digital noise, which the camera compensates for with noise reduction.

Hope this breaks it down for you guys a bit. ISO in digital cameras is how sensitive the camera's sensor is to light. Lower ISO means less noise (less grain in film terms).

Yep, but with modern DSLRs (and I mean like 2002 and up cameras) the digital noise you get under ISO 800 (some new ones ISO 1600+) can't be seen. I've used ISO 1600 on my Canon 20D with noise reduction turned off with very usable results.

This is ISO 1600 f3.5 hand holding with a cheap 18-55 lens so if I dropped it I wouldn't care. Could easily clean it up in PS and print a 8x10 with no visible noise.

I'm shooting with a 1D MK III, and a 7D, but you should see what the latest Nikon cameras will do in terms of high ISO performance, absolutely astounding. I sold my 20D about 3 years ago when the 7D came out.

I've always said that I'll replace my 20d for a 5D "Classic" whenever it breaks for a few years now. It's been dropped and got soaked in countless Florida downpours and it still works flawlessly. Stupid camera.
