The 228 is starting to grow on me. I've emailed the two of them in Jacksonville to do a walk around. My father docks his sailboat in Jacksonville so it would be a good excuse to go see him too.

The 205 is the best deal at 16,500 and mint, but I can't be boatless all summer waiting for him to pay off a loan. If the cabin is a little bigger I can deal with a little less cockpit seating and no camper canvas to have more interior room and a 5.7gxi DP. I called him today and no answer, left a message. I'll wait it out until 8/1, that gives him more then enough time.

If my opinion means anything, I would continue to look at others. If you find somthing you like dont hesitate, buy it and enjoy. I know you are set on the 205 and thats ok, only if you are willing to wait and hope it works out in your favor. Me personaly I would still be shopping.

Unfortunately, like many boat builders, the specs for different years of boats are not readily accessible, like they are for Four Winns boats. A few things I know about the 228 is it is fast, and with a 21 degree deadrise is impressive in rougher conditions. Monterey customer service has been outstanding for me, they sent me specs, build sheet, complete parts list and even an original brochure for our 282CR when we bought it. So you may be able to get some more info from them if you end up wanting it.

I agree with remi. Keep your options open. Look at as many boats as you can and compare likes and dislikes. Looking/Shopping is free. Since you are boatless, you have plenty of time to look. That is what I have done with all my boats, shopped until I found exactly what we wanted. When you find it..... you will know it.

Ric,
Have you told the seller that you stand behind your purchase of the boat but either they have to lower the price if they can't deliver in a reasonable time frame , or to hurry up with the delivery(to retain the sale)...or else this is wasting your time and enjoyment and will just pick one of the many other choices available to you time table and needs. Having said this you should know the status of your current pending deal.

I called both, one guy is on vacation the other goes to VM. Dang, I wanted to see one. Is the economy so freaking good nobody cares to sell their boat??

205 sundowner
23ft w/ sp
8.1 beam
17in drive up
35g gas
9 ppl or 1500lb
Built in cooler
Built in transom shower
camper canvas
no sun pad
seating for 6 comfortable
small cabin
Good for entertaining 5-6 friends on board, overnighting 4. Kinda a swiss army knife. Does everything good, but not one thing well. Not the fastest, and the range is horrible.
Can not make it from my house to fathers on river in range, or from west palm to freeport bahamas, or from key west to dry tortugas.

228 SIc
23.4ft w/ sp
8.6ft wide
23" drive up
57 gal gas
11 pl or 1800lb
no cooler
no camper canvas
seating for 5 tops
big cabin
Designed very well to be stable, fast, and cruise long distances overnighting for 2 people or a good day boat for 4-5. Could easily make the trip from West Palm to Freeport Bahamas, or my house to fathers, or key west to dry tortugas.
Design and styling I think is more modern and sexy compared to the 205

Well it's Monday and still no returned calls or anyone answering. Boat #1 in my "want to buy" list is still the Black 228 Monterey with the 5.7GXi DP because of it's drivetrain. #2 being the 5.0GXi SX Sundowner but it all boils down to who takes my money first. Seriously. Who lists boats forsale but doesn't return calls from someone who is ready to purchase?

Well, there's 4 boats in this state. Two 205's and two 228's.

Wish list in order of want:
1. 2004 Black Monterey 228 SIC 5.7gxi DP
2. 2004 Blue Four Winns Sundowner 205 5.0Gxi SX
3. 2004 Red Monterey 228 SIC 5.0Gxi SX
4. 2003 Sand Four Winns 205 5.0GXi SX

The blue 205 the owner is a flake and the title has a lean on it. The only other one to call me back is the red monterey. I'm going to check it out this weekend. I'm not big on red, but I've been boatless for a month during the best boating month of the year. The black one has 50 more HP and DP and is black but he's not returning calls. Damn shame, I wouldn't even haggle I want that black speed demon.

Opinions on this boat? It might be my next...

Okay scheduled to see red one Saturday AM for a sea trial. 139 hours, kept in dry storage at a marina. No issues except one claw hole in a seat from a dog. Trailer is not trailerable been sitting outside needs tires/bearings/brakes. He's asking low NADA value cause of that, 17,500.

My father's marina is literally across the river. I can't do 17,500 with a bad trailer considering other options are the same price with good trailers. If the trailer can be fixed with just tires/bearings/brakes I'll offer around 16,500 and fix it at my father's marina then drive it down. If it can't be fixed? Well. I doubt he's going to take 15k for the boat cause that's all I'll give him. Trailers for that size boat are expensive not like my H180 where I got a new one for $750 out the door. Could I borrow one to get it home if he takes 15? Of course, my neighbor has a 24ft 2005 regal bow rider he keeps in his slip.

I could motor it down, it's exactly 113 nautical miles from his marina to mine on the river. 4hr trip and $175 in gas. Cheaper then renting a truck + gas. Would be fun, but if the trailer is scrap like I said.. 15,500 MAX. A dang trailer used will be 2 grand.

Well, we can take the 2004 205 Sundowner out of the running. I'm done with that nightmare situation. The owner owes over 22k on the title, lied about paying it off, and lied to the Marina where it's on consignment. They actually called me today wondering if I was still interested and I told them not unless they can guarantee me a title. They promptly said, we guarantee the title is free and clear if you pay in full or if you finance you're will be the only loan on it. I then explained to them how I spoke with the owner and his bank and how he owes 22k on it. They're not happy.

So it's down to 3 boats, and only 1 that answers.

Probably a bit more than ric wants to spend, but a 2007 model.
Nice overall layout, and enough room in the cuddy for you know what....

Looks nice but I'm 6'1, my feet will probably stick out the door lol. For the price the 228SIC's seem to be a better deal for what you get.

I want to keep it in the 18k and under range.

Dealership called me again. They're like "We know the boat has a 22k lien on the title.......so do you wanna come buy it?"

Just saw red one. http://www.boattrader.com/listing/2004- ... -101697542

Bad wood rot needs engine cover replaced all the hinges ripped out, cabin leaks has water damage, tach and depth finder don't work, all gauges leak and have water vapor in them, exhaust leak and needs manifolds they are rusted to heck, oil pressure on the low side of specs way too low for 140hrs, water pump for shower/faucet broken, navigational lights non functional, cabin lights non functional, power steering pump whining + steering jerky, snap in cockpit cover needs repair, "new" bimini top fits like junk (not OEM), missing cooler, horn non functional, blower sounds like it has a broken blade, very sluggish and only got 46mph gps. The trailer that "just needs tires" is a rotted pile of scrap.

Wasted my day, $60 in gas, and over 4hr round trip. It's a 2004 with 140 hours stored inside, it should be close to showroom condition and he described it like it was. I didn't even bother to make an offer, I told him I didn't want a project boat and this is not what I was expecting to see. He said he would discount for every repair needed. Still declined.

Between us I wouldn't even buy that boat for $6000. The condition reflects it was either sunk or in a flood with all the rot and electrical issues. On the bright side I love the 228 SIC. Cabin is at least 1ft bigger then a 205 Sundowner, looks more sporty, and that sun deck thing is cool for babes in bikinis. The quest continues.

Well, I might be in luck. I reverse looked up this # (they are not answering) and it turns out it's a house 10 minutes from my father in Jacksonville. He'll go see if they're home tomorrow.
