Lou,

Curious...how far out is the mooring? So you tie off and jump into other boat...no platform or anything? Also, how do you keep boat from getting whacked against mooring pole...new to me..just curious-

Mooring is close, I live above the beach, could walk there but I drive down with the oars to the dinghy. Park the Jeep, walk across the beach, dump the dinghy in the water and paddle out like 5 min from the lot to the boat. The way the mooring is set up, there is a ball that floats, your mooring line is attached to that, and there is a floating pick up stick that you use to grab the mooring line when you are tying up the boat to it. The mooring ball is secured to the bottom by a 200 lbs cast iron mooring that has chain and then a line that is attached to the bottom of the ball. So the boat never really touches the ball. I just paddle up to the swim platform and tie the dinghy up to the ski tow hook and climb onto the swim platform.
These moorings are very secure, they can keep the boat in place and safe even in tropical force winds. Last summer we had TS Irene come through, they were predicting a Cat 1 hurricane but when it got here it was just a strong TS, winds of 55-60, we took our boat out but most did not and no one had a boat break loose.

For our 298 Vista length I pay just over $3,400 yearly for our slip which has water, hydro, pumpouts, free ice, and seasonal haul in and out included. The marina has a pool and tennis courts, and I can walk to it from our house so it's pretty ideal. This cost is typical of Marina's around southern Georgian Bay. I also optionally pay $2,400 a year for heated winter storage for our boat, winters here are brutal for the most part. Our marina has two huge wharehouses they keep at about 60°F in the winter, and I just go to the office and grab a key, they disable the alarms, and I can work on the boat in comfort anytime I want in winter which is super handy. I don't do any other winterizing other than yearly oil changes, fuel stabalizer, and fogging the engines.

Pricey I know, but what isn't with boating!

Fairfield County- South western CT on the shore at my town marina-- beautiful marina at that, lighted, secure, 24hr guard! $1287.00 any size boat 24-36' (less for smaller boats+ 106.00 elec....free water and pumpout--but gas is 536.9!!!!!!!4/15-11/15 is the season..but only for town residents, and I waited 10 years for this slip which I just got this year...pretty good for this extremely expensive part of the country! Next marina over to the east of me is about $80/ft, over 100/ft for another to the west...

Yep, I use my mooring when there is a storm.

Lou, have you looked into steel mooring vs cast. They last longer abd more holding power.

You know I rented them for years because I thought I'd get a bigger boat and then I'd need a new one anyway, but since it looks like I'm keeping this one for a while I might buy my own next spring...I'll look into that....

We recently purchased a 2006 Vista 258 and have been researching our area. There are four marinas within 5 minutes of our home, MD. Below is the breakdown:

Herrington Harbor $3600 for one year in water, dry dock seperate charge.
Very nice private Eco-friendly marina/resort includes water, shore power, free pump out and discounted fuel etc as well as 4 passes to all the resort amentities. Gym, pool, slipholder events etc. The faciltiy is THE nicest in our area.

Rod n Reel #2400 for one year w/3 months of dry dock on your trailer if u wish. (new reduced price)
Hotel and spa on the water with slips. Includes water and shore power as well as access to hotel amenities. Gym, pool.

Marina West $1800 for one year/3 months of dry dock on your trailer if u wish. (new reduced price)
Associated with Rod N Reel above. Same amenities etc however differnt location so not private and open access by public to your boats and the main roadway/sidewalk is right there.

Breezy Point $1800 for one year
Haven't seen it in person but from website definately the lowest budget facilty, no amenities, shore power seperate electric bill with local power company.

How much discount on fuel? - Do you want a "country club / boat club" feel and use of the extras, or are you going to be on the water away.... Golf is cheaper and get the same nice pool, food, and bar...

That place has more amenities than our yacht club and cheaper. However, it looks like a lot of boats are slipped there and I don't know if I could handle the crowds (especially in the buffet lines). Very nice though.

I would love to have a boat in a slip.....it would be great to be able to drive to the boat and use it rather than tow and launch every time.........but, in So-Cal.........you are looking at about a grand a month........not in my budget!

Wow I guess I have it pretty good....

Leave mine tied up to a floating dock in the provincial park 10 mins from home. There are no services other than what the park has to offer (beach, outhouses, BBQ pits, Parking & Launch) but as a tax payer I own a portion of that dock and get my use out of it. Not sure how it works for you US guys but here in canada anyone can drop a mooring anywhere so long as you are >30' from shore. I do have friends who have waterfront places with private docks around the lake so my boat spends quite a bit of time on those when we're out on it but when not in use it is always waiting for me at the provincial park. I launch in May and pull it out in October, we have a relatively short season compared to many so not having to launch each time affords me a lot more time on the water.

Bogger, they've clamped down on people doing that in Ontario. At least all the areas I know of. Anything good in this province is either illegal or taxed to death :(
