I have to agree with this - my iPhone 5 overheats and shuts down if I leave it in the cup holder in the sun. I would love the large screen, but as I've said before - in rough conditions (when you need it most) having a touch only device, chart plotter or iPad is a show stopper for me. In those conditions you don't have the time to deal with your hand flying around trying to hit the exact right spot on the screen. That said, if the heat and glare are not an issue, and you only boat in nice conditions, it sure makes a nice low priced plotter that can also do a lot more when you aren't moving.

Must be an apple thing. My Samsung has never had an overheat alarm in 100+ degree Florida summers. You do not need cell service to use Navioncs.

I use the iPad on the boat, and have used various handhelds in light airplanes, where sun/heat can also be a big problem.

In addition to using a bimini or other shade, it helps a *lot* to keep the device vertical such that it is more edge-on to the sun. Letting the sun hit full on the case (front or back) makes a huge difference.

Of course, cases can make a difference too, but some seem to make it worse and others seem to help.

The air temp doesn't seem to matter as much as the amount of sun. It's hot in FL, but the sun isn't nearly as intense as in Nevada most of the time.

to answer the heat question. My bimini is always up when running or I will LOBSTER. when on the hook I put the phone int he side shelf in the shade if we put the bimini down while on the hook.. I have service on our lakes. BUT i am getting a GARMIN GLO which is a Blue Tooth RECEIVER that has a 10hz refresh and a rechargeable battery. This receiver is extremely accurate and is the same receiver that is in the big thousand dollar units.

Being that my iPad Mini is WIFI only it does not have the cell antenna or the triangulation gps receiver that is 1hz. aka poop as it is triangulation the same as the way phone gps works triangulating off of the cell towers.

The Garmin GLO is a tru multi satalite link receiver and is 10fold more accurate and faster than a triangulation cell bases gps.

(i mentioned this a few pages ago)

YAY at lunch the Brown truck delivered the case.. LOVE IT

Thanks for all the info. I must have missed the post about the GLO, going to look into that. As for Apple...I wish I could say it's only apple...but truth is my S4 overheats way faster than my wifes iphone4 when we are out, and I keep them out of the sun completely. Still looking for a solution for that. Our heat /sun is a major problem for electronics.

Isn't your lake down like 20 feet or something bc of the drought?

It's down almost 130 ft! But...

Because Lake Mead is the largest reservoir in the United States in maximum water capacity. Formed by the Hoover Dam, Lake Mead is 112 miles (180 km) long when the lake is full, has 759 miles (1,221 km) of shoreline, is 532 feet (152 meters) at greatest depth, with a surface elevation of 1,221.4 feet (327.3 metres) above sea level, and has 247 square miles (640 km2) of surface, and when filled to capacity, 28 million acre-feet (35 km3) of water. However, the lake has not fully reached this capacity since 1983 due to a combination of drought and increased water demand.

so really it's still over 400 ft deep

Hoping to install the USB port into the glovebox today. I have decided the fishfinder/GPS is going to be a winter project, So I will soon have to think about winterizing. Luckily it is garaged, so our temps don't get down too low - It has not frozen through the few sub-zero winter nights we have had, but just to be safe I'll drain it and anti-freeze it, change the oil and lube things up.

I have had my old Galaxy shut down due to heat, but that was inside the car. No problems as yet with the Note 3 - but we had a mild summer.

This picture gives you a look at the lake levels. Haven't been there in years.
