Rain was in the forecast all day for Orlando (and it did), so I left in the morning for a random road trip. Ate lunch at some place in Key Largo and visited the Coral Castle. Drove about 650 miles today for the heck of it.

starting the process of ordering assorted parts, resin, materials for the interior renovation.. with the schedule and approaching cold air i want to get al of the fiberglass work done while the temps are still conducive.. The actual sewing and upholstery can take a slower pace post baby birth..

I have also decided to narrow the ski locker hatch so that i can have it hinged and open with a gas shock. At the moment i have to lift the hatch, shift it to one side then tilt it up and move it out of the way. This proves to me a pain in my eyes. So i have to see how much i will have to narrow it to be able to hinge the hatch like i want.

Awesome! Resident's only or do they allow day passes? In Dennis (next town over) they do residents or non-residents but season only. Same as Barnstable. I think they do day passes up in Provincetown, and possible Nauset Beach in Orleans/Eastham. Would like to check it out next time we are in NY, which should be in November sometime. Can ou actually ride out onto beach? Campfire?

This is at Sore Thumb Beach in Babylon NY which is the eastern most end of Jones Beach Island. You need to have a permit here, either the NY State Park Permit, or the Town of Babylon one. The permit for the state is actually a fishing permit so you need to carry fishing gear + porta potti + recovery gear to be legal. You can bring gas barbacues but no open fires. People do camp out, I have seen everything from Jeep Wranglers with backpacking tents to 3/4 ton diesel pick ups with slide in campers, dual rear wheels that must weigh in at about 8,000 lbs. And they don't get stuck either. We also go to Robert Moses State park (Democrat Point) but like Sore Thumb better because the terrain is more varied and more challenging. Either one of our Jeeps has no problem there, as long as you air down (really down as in 12 psi). Great fun.

Some of the Suffolk County Parks (Smith's Point in Brookhaven) allow day passes and don't require all the equipment that the State Parks do.

Beach driving is different than regular 4 wheeling, you don't need big lifts and giant mud tires, a small lift and a mild all terrain is fine. Actually most vehicles you see are stock. All season tires work fine as long as they are aired down, but if there are sharp shells and sticks you need to be careful. You need a good air pump because you have to air down so far to get enough flotation not to dig in. No rocks or mud (we stay out of water holes) but its salt air so we wash them off well afterwards. We have seen a few epic stucks, but its always someone who did not air down, or whose 4x4 stopped working, or they didn't know how to use it.

The Jeeps just roll over it with little effort, we never even used 4-low, not necessary. We have even seen Toyota Highlanders, Subaru Foresters, and Honda CRVs. They do fine too but lack clearance.
The old school Jeeps like the old boxy Cherokee, Wrangler and early Grand Cherokees do great because they have plenty of clearance even stock, they have a 4x4 system that is manually engaged and not too much power to bog down.
The newer Jeeps with independent front suspension like my 07 do OK but the front end on these is low, I put on 1" taller tires and am in the process of upgrading the suspension, maybe doing a small lift on the front (Bilstein 5100 adjustable ride height shocks allow this).
If you try it what vehicle would you use?

Hi Lou,

We have a 2002 Jeep Liberty that we take over sand on Crowe's Pasture in Dennis. We are required (as in they check people before they go onto the beach often) to air down to max of 15PSI. We usually air down to around 12 like you, and it works great. We used to use Jeep Wagoneers and aired down to 12, you didn't even need 4X4 in soft sand. Those things are boats. On Sandy Neck in Barnstable, you can take self contained RVs out there. See pic below I grabbed on Pinterest. Same as you, regular equipment to take out, shovel, tow strap, 3/4" plywood, fire extinguisher, and either tide chart or app on phone. How much is pass for day any idea?

Liked the pic, looks just like Sore Thumb or Democrat Pt. I think the daily pass (non resident) for the Suffolk Cty parks is $40 which sounds like a lot. The permit I have for the State Parks is $65 for the year but you have to be a resident...

I get the 3 year NY Empire Pass for $160 (I think). Considering the local State ramp charges $8 bucks per launch, it pays for itself in a couple of months 8)

dear lord $8 a launch that for sure will add up fast. Our 60 something ramps on the 3 lakes are state maintained and managed by the nuclear plant as it is all their property. most all have a bathroom (natural hole in the ground compost toilets) but they are in a nice ventilated shelter with nice seats. Along with bear proof trash stations. Almost all have a decent dock that can hold 6-8 boats. The marina has a launch ramp membership that offsets the pay for the dock hands so having a helping hand is nice for some people if they need it and i can see worth the $$. but $8 at a public ramp wow that sure will add up..

Mounted a spare tire to the jet ski trailer. Waterproofed the cover. The St Johns river is in flood stage, all the boat ramps are closed and it's all a no wake zone. Gotta find something else to do this weekend.

A NY Empire pass is good at any State Park, including camping and such, so it is well worth it. Yeah, $8 bucks a launch is criminal, that's why everybody does the pass. The ramps are very well maintained with dockage for 4 boats on each end, bathrooms, fish cleaning stations, and pic-a-nic areas.
