Post subject: | Lake Mead |
Heading to Laughlin, NV tomorrow to pick up the boat from storage garage. I plan to launch Monday at Willow Beach and travel up river towards the Hoover Dam for the day. Tuesday I plan to launch at Boulder Bay and head towards the Narrows for the glassy water. Any ideas for Wed-Fri ? I have boated from Boulder Bay to Temple Bar on a day the lake was glass...not a ripple, but that is my experience with Lake Mead. I'm staying at a timeshare on the south side of the Las Vegas Strip so we are flexible.... |

Jim, as New Hampshire said, don't know if its too late, but I just got home from Mead and you should have beautiful water the rest of the week. If you're staying in South Vegas area, I'd launch out of Callville Bay, it's a lot shorter drive than to Boulder Bay (Hemmenway Launch). Either way, since you know where the narrows are, go through them and when it opens up you're in Virgin Basin. You can either go to an almost immediate left and back into a cove that is about half the size of Havasu, or I'd just go right for about 3-5 miles and stay about a quarter mile off shore and just turn her off and float. Most boats come into Virgin Basin and go North to the left up to Temple Bar, so going South along the shore line kind of puts you into "no mans land". On the days you'll be there, you'll be lucky to see a boat go by in the distance every two or three hours. Put your bimini up, ski when you want, but as long as you stay a little ways off shore and come back to the general area, you won't even have to anchor. And I almost forgot, you CAN'T go from Willow to the Dam on Sundays or Mondays, it's CLOSED! There's a sign and people ignore it, but the rangers don't and it will cost you a fortune!!! Hope you have a blast! |

Hope you have a blast! I did not see your post until after I got back. We launched at Willow and went south due to the closure. We could not believe how cold the water was! The scenery was worth the time spent there. We slipped the boat at the Las Vegas Marina and went out Tues through Saturday (Friday off). It was 115-120 degrees every day so we took Friday off and enjoyed what Vegas had to offer. As you said, we did not see many boats at all throughout the week and that was great. Saturday was busy around the dam but still much more enjoyable then the weekends we spent at Lake Mohave. We tend to drift and swim as apposed to setting up an EZ-Up and chairs in a cove. We figure if were driving 4-5 hours to boat, were boating! I think we may store the boat in Boulder City this winter and make Lake Mead our primary location next year. |

Post subject: | Lake Mead update |
Will be at Lake Mead July 6-13. I am looking to launch out of Callville Bay, as recommended by scotchwater. I figure he owns a "boating" home there....he should know! Thanks for the heads up. Last year, I wanted to see the Hoover Dam looking up at it from the river as opposed from the lake side. Hopefully, I get up to it later in the week. I also plan is to visit each of the marinas for lunch, beverages, and fuel. Looking for some interesting ideas for those who have spend time on the lake there! |

I don't recall if I posted this previously or not, but there is some good info on this site. I use it for Mohave, but it has Mead and Powell info on there also: http://www.riverlakes.com/lake_mohave.htm Enjoy! Erik |
