Was a gorgeous day Sunday, but waves and rip tide on Lake Michigan showed up with a vengence with at least 3 drownings on the lake. One in Michigan City, One right outside our marina in St. Joe, and another presumed in Pentwater. Waves were 6-8 after a storm Saturday night. Superboat Offshore boat race was even cancelled due to the high waves. Just a reminder to all, be smart, be safe. Unfortunately, alot of folks think that recreational boating is completely safe, and storms and waves only affect the "ocean". I was out last weekend on a 41 foot sailboat, and the 5-6 foot rollers had us all a bit nervous (and a little green around the gills). And that was with a Captain who had sailed the Atlantic on the same boat! And of course, drinking and the ole "Hey, watch this!" contribute to some, not all accidents. So far, no major incidents on my side of Lake Ontario this season. Stay safe.... |

I didn't always wear a life jacket but I do now, there have been 3 bad accidents here this summer, one involved 3 children trapped in the cabin of a 34 Silverton that capsized on July 4th over in Oyster Bay. I bought 4 inflatable life vests and I wear them when rowing out to the boat and back and also when out on the water esp anywhere the water is a little rough. Get the nice inflatables (but not for water sports) they are more comfortable and you do get used to them. |

We did not attempt to go out on Sunday, definitely not Lake Michigan but not even our smaller lake. The Holland light house was open for tours so we waited in line to go inside. During that time at least a dozen boats motored out the channel only to turn around and head back in, most without life jackets on. With 25+ mph winds, 4 foot swells in the channel, and a small craft advisory I'm not sure why they even tried. Of course a few were broadside while turning around just as a wave came in. But a few on jet skis did go out and a paddle boarder came along also. |
