I am considering changing out seats in my boat. My boat has the 'front-to-back' jump seats. These are not the best for a comfortable driving position. I am thinking of getting a captains chair for the drivers side.

My problem is finding one that matches, and also wondering if I am really going to improve the driver comfort enough to make a difference. My wheel does not tilt.

I also like the idea of openning up a little more floor space. We rarely have 8 on the boat, and I'm not sure if anyone has sat in the rear facing seat behind the drivers.

Anyone have any experience or recommendations?

Thanks

Hey gresh, I just posted on the thread about adjustable seats on this topic (kinda). I have bucket seats on my Sundowner and am gonna change the drivers seat to a leaning post like this one: http://www.defender.com/product.jsp?path=-1|7504|63440|730250&id=1972636

I hardly ever sit in mine when driving and am tired of doing the one-legged lean. Soon as I get the $$$, I'll be ordering one...

What color? I have a blue/white wise captains seat that needs minor repair.. I'll sell it for $40 + ship. Also browse the classifieds for the tilt steering column, it's a generic piece used on tons of boats. They're always popping up on my local craigslist for around $100

I know what you mean. My wheel is too low to drive comfrtably standing though. I don't know whether to go with an older style bucket seat, or a newer one that flips up...

I found this one on ebay that matches boat year and style - just wrong color. May be able to change upholstry color?

That aquamarine is hard to match :)

I may take you up on that. Do you have a picture of them? Do you have the post too?

If they need minor repair, maybe I could get the blue swapped for matching color also? That should be a relatively easy fix for an upholstry place shouldn't it?

Hmmm, interesting proposition. Only downside is I have to keep my post to use with the leaning post (slides over existing post). But mine would match your boat I think, Horizon vs Sundowner style patterns might not match. Here is a pic where you can see my buckets, do they match your interior?

Unfortunately, no.

Here's mine:

My teal/aquamarine color is more 'blue' than green.

I would be afraid of the look of having one Capt chair at helm and leaving the port side back to back seats. The carpet fade marks will tell the tail of the change....I would rethink it personally.....I have the Capt chair and still do the one legged lean.

I know what you mean about carpet fade/wear. But, several boats have one captain chair at helm and a port side back-to-back. It is very common in smaller bowridedrs.

I appreciate the comment. As I mentioned before, I'm not sure the change will really solve the driving position issue.

Probably should just leave it alone...

If it were me I'd look at at Wise seating because they make many styles that might match up, as far as carpet get rid of it...

It seems that all of the new seats are bright white and if they have a trim color its blue, red, or tan. I'm a stickler for matching as well as I can. I'd like to find a used FW seat from that time.

As far as the carpet, I see no reason to get rid of it.

Well when I get a chance to post the pix of my deck rebuild, you can see how good carpet is for boats, with plywood decks. It is a major cause of rot. I can tell you that the decks on these boats, unless something changed between '88 and 94, are plywood, they are stapled down and everywhere a staple is, rot starts, and none of the holes they drill to mount the seats are sealed and that is were the rot always starts. Moisture and dampness gets under the carpet, and because of the carpet, it cannot dry out. It is a cheap and nasty way to build boats and none of the better boats made today has glued down carpet like that, they all have a fiberglass liner.
If I had that boat and I wanted to keep it a long time the first thing I'd do is rip up all the carpet, get rid of that nasty glue, fix any spots were rot is starting (and unless you live in the desert Southwest, it probably has, you just can't feel it yet) and then 'glass over it again and either gelcoat it in non skid gelcoat or use a deck paint like they use for work boats with non skid in it.

The other thing you could do, is get a set of standard captain's seats and get an upholstery shop to match up the FW colors and add accents in that color. That would coast more but its about the only way.

I understand all of the issues and potential rot problems with the floor. But now, there are no issues. It has been fine for 18 years, so it isn't all that bad.

I have checked every screw going into the floor. The seat screws and all deck screws (most are on top of the carpet). They are all solid and still hold strong.

It may be necesarry to do some day, but to do it before it's necessary makes little sense.

That is the route I'm leaning toward.
