East Coasters, watch out for Sandy......

Looks like Hurricane Sandy is coming up the coast, they are predicting landfall somewhere around the Delmarva area or South Jersey. I pulled the boat out to be on the safe side and because it's time anyway but you never know with these storms, they can do unpredictable things. I saw 4 other people pulling their boats too but there are still plenty of boats in the water. I bet tomorrow and Sunday will be busy ramp days.....
With Irene which was a TS when it came here last summer, we got maybe 55-60 mph winds, not much damage, lost power 3 days (got a genny and a gas caddy now) and the boats that were left in, none really had damage.

I'm out, she's wrapped and tucked away. Hopefully wont be too bad. My genny is full and ready. Plenty of fuel stock piled. Need to move the grill and all will be good. Just finished cleaning the gutters and putting yard stuff away and tying things down. Good luck everyone!

It's expected to be a Cat 1 hurricane for landfall. You guys get nor'easters every year worse than Sandy.

Ric nor'easters are not cat 1 storms, you might get 40-50 gusts but not 80 mph winds, but the problem with them, is that if it hits at high tide, they push water into Long Island Sound and that causes a lot of flooding at local marinas. The street where the boatyard is here was flooded for 3 days when we had a bad one in Dec '92 ,started out as rain, turned to snow and ice. Everything including all the cars were frozen. It was a miracle that the power didn't go out.
Our house is elevated about 75 feet above sea level so no floods here but we could have wind damage. But on the south shore of LI, there is a very significant flooding risk and I bet there will be evacuations.

I'm directly across from Port Jeff. @ South Benson Marina in Fairfield...me & the wife were down there today having 1 more cocktail on the boat! Wanted to pull it out today but low tide was 3:49pm---too low to use the ramp, will go there first thing tomorrow morning. Only about 10 percent of the boats are out as of today, but I suspect tomorrow will be rather busy there.....a few blow-boaters today were tying down their sail covers and spoke to one guy w/ a 34' sail who was not hauling it out......we'll see what happens....with a full moon, high tides and the storm, this is gonna be interesting....

The ramp that is right by my house is usable only from 1-2 hrs before and after high tide, at most and thats for smaller boats. I put a long trailer tongue on my trailer just for this reason. I went down there at 8:00 am today (high tide was at 9:30) and it was perfect, flat calm no wind or current to speak of. Had it out in 15 min, took it home to clean the bottom and drive. Got a nice stinky pile 'o barnacles to dump.
Pt Jeff is to the east of us, and the harbor I keep the boat in is very protected from wind and waves but still I like to pull it when these storms come.
One of my ex-neighbors had a 23' Chaparral that he kept there, and on the 1 year anniversary of 911 we had an extremely windy day, like 40-50 mph gusts. Well his boat broke loose and as luck would have it he happened to see it, and got down there, jumped into a dinghy and was able to catch it before it crashed into the bridge at the end of the harbor. Talk about luck!
I've kept mine on the mooring there for 10 seasons worth and have not had big problems other than the barnacles and birds.

I tied a few extra spring lines, the wind is gusting around 45 and a squall line is about to hit. I'm no master rigger but this is what I setup since my dock is short for proper paperwork rigging. Plenty of slack for waves but not enough to rub against the dock. Basically balanced. I'm pretty sure the boat would be hanging perfectly mid air if all the water disappeared. The snap in cover is still pretty new and taught like a drum, not worried about water or wind getting a hold of it. I resealed the hatch a while ago, so cabin wise it stays bone dry.

My neighbors boat was banging against the dock so I added a line on his, and his bimini top was up getting beat up so I secured it. Couldn't find his covers though, and his battery was about dead when I checked the bilge pump. Tried get a hold of him but no contact, he used to check on it every other day but haven't seen him in a week or 2. If we have A LOT of rain he might be in trouble. I have a spare bilge pump/small battery/hose I used to recover an almost sunk paddle boat for my neighbor, if in the morning it's looking low I'll have to go save it.

One mile from shore in S. Florida. If this were Kansas, I would just call it a crappy day.
This thing does not have that much in it yet anyways. Irene had alot of rain with her, Sandy does not.

I'm about 30 miles inland and about 5 miles away from all the rain bands. Wind is around 30mph but that's it. It's from the north and big trees on shore are blocking it from my boat, it's relaxing not even moving. Not expecting anything more as it's moving further offshore. Good luck up there!

pulled the boat out of the slip today, winterized, bought a generator (home), showered and had a cocktail ALL before 6pm!!!!!!! Bring it on.....oh, and a new roof last week too!

Just finished filling 6 gallon water buckets (to flush toilets) if we loose power and it's raining sideways. Have plenty of batteries, just blew up he air mattresses for me and the Admiral (in the basement). Plenty of wine (few hundred bottles in the basement). Generator in the garage on stand by....guess we're ready! We're 35 miles from the coast....good luck everyone! P.S. four calls from my boat insurance company. Played with them a bit, we all laughed and they wished us luck....told them only concern is if a tree falls on her!

You're 35mi inland (same as me from coast). Your only concern is old trees falling. You might see gusts in the 60's but average in the 40s if it hits shore around 90mph. What you need to be concerned about is water. Storms like Sandy can produce FEET of water per hour and can easily turn a basement into a swimming pool/death trap. Point the boat towards the wind if you can, which if you're in south jersey will be mostly from the north if it keeps current track. You don't want it sitting broadside to that kinda force.

This storm is a blessing in disguise for me. It's supposed to hit us as a sub tropical storm but with tons of rain. It's been raining hard here all day and the same for tomorrow.

We have a tentative buy on a water front home on the Trent that's deemed "a flood plain" and our home inspection is scheduled for Tuesday. The rain storm is supposed to start here early Monday with the worst on Tuesday. I will get to see how close the Trent gets to the house. PERFECT!
