I was thinking of changing my boat insurance from State Farm to United Marine Underwriters. Does any one know anything about them?

I have State Farm for everything else and use United Marine Underwriters for the boat. I've used them for 4 yrs, seems very professional so far. I sat down with my State Farm guy and compared policies. I have better coverage at about a 1/3 the price. State Farm quoted $1,180 and I pay $365 to UMU. Declared value, so you will have to work that out. I've never had a claim, so I can't say anything about that, but so far they've been fair.

Why, :?

Uhhhh, Hurricane Sandy........

We have used Global Marine insurance for 15 years. They find the lowest rate, best policy from whomever has it. We are currently
under Progressive, as they had the best rate through Global Marine.

I went through geico. 1/3 of what everyone else was and you can choose declared value or actual. They also do down time rate so I'm not paying for the 6 months I'm not using it.

I prefer year round coverage. Having a hurricane blow thru your yard makes you reconsider no insurance when not in the water!

The Geico Insurance he has is year round, just a reduced rate for winter layup. Boat is fully covered for storage, just not operating it. Same as all decent marine policies.

My state farm was only $360 for the year so I liked that. We used to have tow boat us insurance which was nice because they would tow you if you broke down on the water.

After comparing policies from State Farm, Markel, Boat US, & Progressive, I decided to go with United Marine Underwriters. Overall they had the best coverages and price.
