Wondered when they were finally going to nail this loser. Still seems like a light sentence for killing someone while
operating a boat. :x

Quote:
An Orlando boat dealer who was accused of piloting a boat while he was drunk and crashing, killing a 20-year-old and injuring four others, was sentenced to six years in federal prison last week.

Mark David Watts, owner of Liquid Sports Marine, was charged with killing Shelby Harper, a former Amateur Athletic Union basketball star, during the accident on Lake Irma in east Orange County in July 2006, according to the Orlando Sentinel.

Orange County court records show that Watts, 51, pleaded no contest to operating a boat under the influence of alcohol and three counts of boating under the influence, according to the Orlando Sentinel. State prosecutors dropped the more serious charges of vessel homicide, boating under the influence causing damage and reckless operation of a vessel.

In addition to prison, Watts will have to serve three years on probation. A judge also ordered a special condition that Watts speak publicly about the danger of drinking alcohol.

Harper and her friends met Watts and his wife at the Roxy nightclub shortly before the accident, initial reports said. When the club closed early that morning, the Wattses invited Harper and her friends to their canal-side home on Lake Irma near University Boulevard, reports said.

Witnesses told deputies that Watts drank at least eight cocktails before taking the boat out. Two guests reportedly skipped the boating after they saw Watts fall into the water when he first tried to board his boat.

Reports taken at the time showed that witnesses told authorities that when Watts finally got into the boat, he sped away from the dock at full throttle. Watts, who was boating without running lights, rammed a dock.

Those on board the boat suffered broken arms, a collapsed lung, a lacerated liver and facial fractures. Harper suffered a broken neck and died at the hospital.

Ramming docks is quite popular around here. Our lakes are shallow and they can extend out easily 100ft. I've had to put LED solar lights on a few docks on my lake cause you CAN NOT see them at night (sober).

Glad to see a drunk boater brought to justice! After reading the story I can't believe the people with him let him drive that boat, especially after he fell in the water trying to board his boat. If he would have been trying to drive a car like that I bet someone would have taken his keys.

I see Liquid Sports Marine is also a Four Winns dealer at 2 of their 3 dealerships in Florida.

Yes this is sad...just a question though;

it says that Shelby met them at a nightclub and that she was 20 years old? Is the drinking age different in Florida or did I miss something? Not trying to take anything away from a horrible tragedy, just trying to understand what possessed a twenty year old girl to get on a boat early in the morning with a drunk 51 year old man?

I'll probably be sorry I asked, and will probably get flamed, but really just trying to understand no disrespect meant.

I have no idea what you are getting at here. Many states allow people under 21 in clubs. Looks like Florida is one.

We are not talking about a 20 year old girl leaving with a 51 year old man. The man was with his wife and invited a group of people back to their place. We don't know the relationships of anyone in this group of people to the boat owners, not that that's relevant here.

And this won't be the last 20something leaving a bar/club with someone drunk...

You are correct. I had no idea, I live in Vegas where if you are under 21 you can't do anything. I stand corrected.

Orlando is 18 to get in female, 21 to drink. Men 21+ only. Underage usually just wear wristbands and get a giant black X on their hand with a sharpie. That proves to be a big problem that has arisen in the news quite a few times because underage HS girls will borrow their sisters/friends ID (or fake) and go clubbing. The problem happens is when they meet a guy... and several guys which I don't believe is their fault have been prosecuted and live the rest of their lives as a pedophile because they picked up a chick in an 18+ club that lied about her age to get in. I don't think it's fair and neither does anyone else because it's the clubs fault.. but underage sex is underage sex. 21+ clubs offer no guarantee either. A club I used to goto ALL the time knowingly let a 16yo girl in and get her bottle service ALL the time cause her father was rich. Mind you she looked/dressed of age but I quit going because it ended up being like her and 4 friends every friday night getting wasted in a booth.. all in HS.. and nobody gave 2 shits.

Unbelievable, but still way too common. Seems like every long weekend in the summer there are several reports of fatalities on the water, so many of them related to drinking. I just don't get how someone who wouldn't think of drinking and getting behind the wheel of a car, has no problem with a few drinks then head out for a spin on the water.

Six years just doesn't send a strong enough message.

Why the sex discussion? What's adult age in Florida? Here in Texas an adult is 17 so unless different an 18 and over club has zero to do with consensual sex....drinking age is 21.

What a waste of life....I don't buy the hard to see dock...hell the mans waterfront house was where he took off from....did they build a dock while he was at the bar.
