Petrol station prices in UK about £0.94 per litre, about £3.60 per US gallon. ($US 6.50 a gallon!). It's gone up about 40% in the last 5 years. I have to buy it for my boat at a petrol station as there's no petrol at the marina. Due to a tax anomaly, marinas in the UK (legally) sell red, reduced tax rate diesel to pleasure boaters at about half that price. Hence popularity of diesel boats in the UK. People with big, multi engined diesel powered boats are understandably not keen for this anomaly to be removed and there are campaigns by boating mags etc for it to be retained. No mention by them them trying to get reduced tax petrol for other boaters though!! No such thing as "red" petrol unfortunately. The red dye is put in the diesel to stop boaters, farmers etc using that diesel in road vehicles, it can be detected at ppm level; big penalties if caught, many people in 4x4s disappear quickly from local markets when the rumour starts that the customs and excise people are there to start dipping fuel tanks!
