What have folks been paying for their 20 hour service and what things have been noted as issues that were fixed or adjusted? I'm bringin in our H190 next week and woould like a comparison. My conversation with the dealer has been that they change all the fluids switch the engine over to synthetic oil, align the engine check the trim shift cables etc for proper operation. Anyhting else that they don't normally do that I should ask about?

I'm not certain how close you are to your dealer, for those not down the street the 20 hour provides an opportunity for addressing any outstanding warranty issues, and possibly purchasing those factory options you didn't think you wanted and now find you must have. Great time to get any questions answered - maybe ask about actual hours on the chip versus hours on the hour meter. The visit also could be an opportunity to load up on Volvo brand fluids and lubricants. If you plan on doing any future maintenance or upgrades yourself, talk them over with the service manager.

I just paid just about $380 (same boat as yours). Most of it seemed to be labor @$90/ hr for 3+ hrs. While I can handle fluid changes myself, the sterndrive alignment is over my head, and I thought best to let dealer do this service (as boat still under warrantee).

That's a lot closer to what it ought to be. I think they get new owners a little bamboozled over the 20 hour service. It's not much more than an oil change. If they pull the drive to align the engine (a worthwhile thing to do), add on 1-2 hours of labor.

I paid just under $200, but that was 7 years ago! Mike's right, it's little more than a oil change. As far as pulling the drive,it's no big deal either. My DX is heavy, last year I paid around $90 to have them pull the drive and lube the gimal bearing and u-joints.

Just to follow up, we paid $280 for our 20 hour service. all the fluids were changed, engine aligned, switch to synthetic oil, they buffed out some marks in the gell coat, a couple were from shipping and a couple were from dock and fender rub. They washed it and vacuumed it out too.

I just hit 20 hours on my 278.

My dealer said it's just an oil change, but from reading this thread it appears more than that. I also know my generator needs its oil changed according the manual.

My dealer has been out to my boat a half dozen times since we bought it in May, so addressing my issues has been an ongoing process.

I wet slip mine, so in order to align the drive will they have to take it out of the water? Is this really necessary?

What is going to happen if there is a slight mis-alignment will be premature failure of the gimbal bearing. I did my own 20 hr service on both my mains and the genset. I checked all the connections, etc. I did not have the alignment checked. It was checked within the first 100hrs as Volvo had both drives pulled and a shim added to see in the shifting could be made a bit easier. Turns out that the problem was the cables not the shift lever.

Figure $85/hr labor. To check the engine alignment, the drive needs to be pulled and the alignment tool used. That is at least 1 hrs labor. Now add the oil, filter and labor to change the oil. Another 3/4 hr to service the genset. So you are looking at 3hrs of labor IMHO minimum.

If the gimbal gets worn and needs replacement, figure $60 for the bearing and probably 1.5 hrs to replace and align the engine. So, will an alignment prevent a gimbal from going out, not necessarily. Will getting the alignment done at the 20 hr service make it easier to get the gimal bearing replaced under warranty if something does happen, probably.

My Merc manual makes NO reference to alignment of the engine at the 20 hour service period. Only to a change in the gear lube and engine oil.

Interesting. Volvo doesn't list it either. A quick scan of the FW manual does not show it in the General Maintenance section, but under owner's responsibilities there is a note as follows:

IMPORTANT: MAke sure that your dealer checks the engine alignment during your boat's 20 hour checkup. The engine alignment check should be performed in accordance with recommended procedures as stated by the engine manufacturer in your engine's owner's manual. Failure to do so could result in drive train damage which is not covered under the warranty.

A reference is also made to 'Warranty Information North America', but my quick scan also found no reference to engine alignment, other than that which was to be performed prior to delivery of the boat.

Perhaps FW is fudging on the pre-delivery check, and placing the burden on the owner to cover costs of the check at 20 hours?

$217 @ G&R Marine in CT - seems like a lot to me for an oil change!

$393 for my 20hr at the marina. That included labor and parts. I was happy it was only that much.
