I have two dual purpose 1000 cranking amp marine batteries that both need to be replaced. I was wondering if I could buy a battery with less cranking amps. 650 cranking amps . I have a 2007 f224 with a 5.0 volvo penta

I am replacing one of my batteries this season also - the old one is a Group 29M with 675 CCA and it's worked great since 2007....I have the 5.7 although I'm not sure it makes much difference.
I suspect the battery you are looking at would be fine - what brand and where from?

I was looking at a napa dual purpose battery.

There are a bunch of battery posts in here that you can search on - most of them end up with the debate between Optima batteries vs. wet cell, etc....

My last battery came from Pep boys (Energizer) - I'm debating between buying another from Pep Boys vs. getting an Interstate. Turns out the price difference is negligible....both are approx $130 for a Group 29. Others have suggested batteries from Walmart.

Interesting on the Deka posts - Care to elaborate why?

Here in SD, the Deka Group 29M is more expensive than the Interstate....is it worth it?

I have had no luck with interstate batteries. The las one i bought barely mad it 3 years and the Deka was over 5 years strong

My previous 248 had Interstate batteries in it, and I didn't even make 3 years with them also. They aren't my first choice by far either.

We have always used AC Delco Marine in all our boats, and am setting up the SD with the same, in a two battery system.

I replaced my original Interstates at 6 years and could have gotten 7. The 2nd set is about to start their 3rd year. I've believed for years that lead acid batteries are very inconsistent in their manufacturing. I worked at an auto parts store as a teenager and I'd bet 1/3 of all the batteries we sold came back defective (another reason to have dual batteries in a boat).

+2 on the Deka. I have two 31 series deep cycles on the house side of things. Regularly flog the stereo most of the afternoon and overnight with the fridge on low. We have never been at a loss for power. Not sure if they are made locally or not (PA/MD area), but paid $129 each. We are starting our 4th year with them.

I have a pair of Deka gp 27 dual purpose batteries in our boat, I installed them in 2008 and they are still going strong. With lead acid batteries the main thing is to make sure they do not sit in a partially discharged state too long. I charge them when I winterize the boat and then again a couple of times over the winter. Since these have always come back up to charge quickly I'd probably get them again.
Another thing to be aware of is if you use battery boxes, often the battery does not fit the inside of the box tightly and the tie down straps do not hold the battery box all that securely. I had boxes and I made wood shims to keep the batteries from moving but still did not like the strap, it does not hold the box tightly and is a pain to remove when you want to charge the batts. I finally switched over to battery trays and I do have the terminal insulators for all the posts on the batteries. I think the fact that the batts don't fit tight in the box and the strap doesn't hold the box tight allows the batteries to bang around way too much and can contribute to shortening the life of batteries. If you think of it, they would never secure a vehicle battery the way some boat batteries are installed. I would have kept the boxes if there was a way to make them secure to the deck, without screwing them to the deck (that would mess up access to the oil filter and starter). Didn't want to have to remove screws in the deck each season that encourages rot. With the trays you can remove the battery and unscrew one of the retaining rods and then its really not in the way.

Back to the original question though....

You don't need 1000CCA to turn your engine over....Is your current battery a straight cranking battery?

Brand is your choice, but probably any battery you get in the correct group will suffice. Probably want a dual-purpose battery if you run your stereo, etc. while the engine is off.
