So we have had our boat since new (7 years) and didn't get a mooring cover till laster year (stupid mistake) We had a 88 Sea Ray that shined like no other because the original owners had a mooring cover. Anyways, it was of course oxidized. I manged to get the left side better than new, so much so my dad is giving me $250 when we sell it. My process is a bit out of whack considering I tried many different things. So I first wash it, then I use 3M Super-Duty Rubbing compound, I follow up with 3M Finesse-it, and finish it off with Scotchgard Marine wax. This was all done with a Coleman Powermate Random Orbit Buffer. It was a POS bought at Wal-mart for 14.99, but hey, it got the job done right? It is now dead and in the trash, but it accomplished alot, I bought a Ryobi polisher to finish the other side, and for the life of me I can't figure out WHY it doesn't shine like the other side!! Pads probally play a role here. What pads should I use? And am I using the right product? TIA.

You want to use a wool compounding pad with the two 3M products, and then IMHO forget the buffer, and apply the wax by hand, using microfiber pads and cloths. You can use the buffer with a foam polishing pad, but only to apply the wax, not to take it off. Off hand, the only other reason I can think of that the one side isn't waxing as shiny could be because it's the sunny side, and hot from the sun. That will mess up many a wax.
