Anyone got experience dealing with a family member who is showing signs of an allergy to lake water? That is a itchy rash that occurs nearly every time after they swim in the lake?

I've heard of "swimmers itch". Do they have any of these symptoms?

I've also heard of this caused by a type of algae in the water and the itch/rash usually lasts about 3 days

I'm pretty sure it's not swimmer's itch because only one member of the family gets it after we've all swam in the same water.

Not completely related, but possible....
My sinuses used to go completely bonkers for about 2 days after swimming (only Smithville). Wearing goggles helped immensely. I realize that's not much help, but hope it helps point you in the right direction, as allergies and the lake is a bad combo.

Any idea what the e coli levels are at the body of water? Could be a reaction to that as well. E coli is present a lot more than we think-especially after lots of rain.

Could sun screen be playing a role? My kids are very sensitive to certain types of sun screen and will occasionally will get a rash.

It's a dammed up river lake smack in the middle of farming country. Very possible it's got e-coli in it.

It gets bad in the Spring/early Summer around here on our reservoirs. All of the goose and other animal droppings on the banks get washed into the lakes when the rains are heavy.

I had a friend come down with swimmer's itch once. Five of us all swam in the same water and he was the only one that got it. I think some people are just more susceptible to it than others.

If at all possible you should try and rinse off immediately with fresh water and see if that helps. My wife's aunt has a lake house in Cali and was told when she moved in about swimmer's itch and how to minimize it by rinsing off.

That and the person might already have a skin condition or other allergies. It might it be worth having a dermatologist evaluate the situation. Could be something else that the water just aggravates.

I'd definitely look at changing sunscreen too.

We always rinse off thoroughly after getting out of the water.
