Oh man i have hit a BRICK wall.. well my old prop is all eat the heck up as of end the summer it is toast and cant be used..

a buddy sent me an aluminum 3 blade 14.5x19 the same as what was on the OMC well it was from an alpha drive and evedently the spline length down the shaft on the motor the OMC is shorter than the MERCS.. AWESOME now this means i need ot press out the OMC hub ad install into the new prop....

has anyone done this?? know any tips tricks.. links to info?? called 2 local shops.. both are a week turn around adn they send them out to a guy in the next town.. that guy charges $50-60 depending on the hub he said.. awesome.. i can buy a new prop with hub for $115.. uuuh..

I had my SST prop re-hubbed from an OMC spline to the Volvo Spline (and balanced). Was about $50 at our local prop shop, and just 1 day.

This is not a do-it-yourself item... requires a proper press and tooling.

Any prop works with any engine if you have the tools.

Otherwise just goto iboats and get a new one

yea this guy is a prop shop.. only guy within an hour that can do it that i can find.. damn he has cornered the market 3 lakes and only guy.. $50-60.. guess ill have him swap it into the new never used matching alum prop same as my eat up one.. and ill order an SS at later date.. this will get me on the water this weekend.. not exactly what i wanted to do but that life.. sometimes brick walls come up and you have to hire a guy with a ladder.. i was trying to do everything in my shop and not farm out anything..

With that omc drive its probably worth wild to hit up harbour freight and buy a press for $100 so you can do it yourself from that point forward.

wrong.. the spline length is different on some.. hence reason i need different hub...

also ANY is too open.. i am 100% sure that the brass show prop from my 1960 johnson which is NO SPLINES and uses a sheer pin and cap with cotter pin.. will not work on a lets say.. a OFFSHORE surface drive.. these are boats that fall into the "ALL BOATS" category... im just saying.. if we want to be specific.. :lol:

this thought has crossed my mind also.. it is an item that time to time i could use in my shop and i do not have one..

my shop has.. alot but missing a HYDRO PRESS
_14' restored (last winters project) 1959 Rockwell bandsaw with conversion to low speed steel saw for making my knives
_8" bench vice
_2HP 1.25 chuck (can be swopped to up to a 2" chuck 7 speed drill press
_10" bench grinder/buffer
_1x30 belt sander
_4x36 belt/ 6" disk sander
_saws for anything
_lots of electrical stuff
_around 20 drawers of tools
_25 gallon high flow compressor
_heat treat furnace goof for 2,900* (thats the hottest my thermo couple has measured it so far) i only need 2,300 for my stainless
_automotive specific tools


need/want list
MILL converted to cnc with servos (project for future)
new welder
plasma cutter


i have a decent shop for 27 years old.. next house in about 1-3 years i have a "shop fund stash" if house doesnt have large shop.. i already have ok from the wife to build a detatched 25x40 shop lift.. awning on one side for boat storage.. 8' tall doors.. will be my CAVE

You young guys, just you wait !

Very sad @ 57 years old finding tools you bought that would for sure be useful. never to have been used ! What can I use that 3 inch "C" spanner for ? Still, in the late 1970's/ early 1980's when metric was the way to go here, I bought a load of high quality obsolete A/F sockets and spanners cheaply ( spanners = wrenches in US speak; not the same as wenches, which I also remember fondly). They ( not the wenches) have proven invaluable working on my FW boat and VP running gear. There seems to be some metric things creeping in though on American engines though !

PM me and i can get you info on BUILDING one for under a grand... yes i do have cad plans made for one. its a bolt together design all you need to do is have a shop CNC or water jet the parts and you assemble.. not to tangent too much but yes a 3x72 belt sand/grinder is on the NEED list for my knife making..


OK back to the topic at hand PROPS

ok here is the dead.. being the problem solver i am. last night i made a press with my vice. it was a make shift but it pressed out the hub from the old eat up prop as expected it had spun once so the top notches were rounded off AKA its junt.. ill make some sort of art out of the prop..

so buy a new prop is the solution. selling the free prop from my buddy. make 50 or so to offset the new prop..

NOW 4 vs 3 original prop is a 3 14.5x19 so equal 4 would be a 14.5x17

my comparisons..
3:
+outstanding acceleration and top speed
-less balls towing
-slower hole shot
-slips in a turn, more likely to cavatate

4:
+higher static thrust great for heavier loads like towing and Slalom ski and tubing..
+better hold in the turns with a larger grab surface area
+more stern lift and midrange performance when cursing
+better cruise speed fuel economy
-slower acceleration thru mid speeds
-reduced WOT top speed (from reading looking at about a 4mph loss)

ok weighing these items i dont run WOT alot but i do love speed.. now the 4 advantages in more areas that i use a lot..
hole shot (all the time).....mid range cruse (i use all the time).....hold in turns (i turn all the time)......towing power (i tow most the times we are out playing on the water)

so logically it would make since to grab a 4b. is my rationalizing and thinking logical?? i can get a 4b alum OMC hub for $125 to my door i feel this is a fair price.. no im not getting a SS $4-600 prop. yea SS is better int he long run.. well im not 100% ill always want to have the 4b on so $100 is ok.. and allows me to buy a faster 3 for the charity poker runs on the 2 lakes i want to participate in the 50 class.. and that would be way less money and i would have 2 props for the cost of one ss prop.. and i cna replace alum 2-3x before the same cost as SS.. yes SS can be re tuned and turned. but you have to think of the shop costs.. they average 30-100 for prop tuning and at that cost i can grab a new alum and be boom done...

IS my 4b for overall use the logical choice for right now.... and gonna borrow a few 3b props for best WOT tp speed from prop shop in a month..
