Post subject: | Marina Question |
I would like some input before I possibly overreact to a relatively minor situation at the marina where I rack store my boat. I went to do some tinkering on my boat today and noticed that a few things were not as I left them. After further review, I found two coast guard placard stickers on my boat that I hadn't stuck on. Evidentially someone at the marina boarded my boat and stuck two large stickers under my helm. Why would the marina do that without my permission? Is this common practice and is it acceptable? Maybe they were trying to get me in compliance, which by the way I was just boarded by the coast guard last weekend for a routine check and everything was fine? Even so, I would think they should have asked first. I'm kind of pissed off about it. Should I be? Thanks for any input and advice as to what, if anything, I should do. |

I don't believe it was used. But someone definitely took the cover off and boarded it to place those stickers on. |

That doesn't sound right. I would question the management for sure. In the half dozen years or so that I've had my boat rack stored, the only time the marina has done anything with it is when they summerized/winterized the boat. |

When you say Coast Guard placard stickers, what do you mean? Being boarded here by the CG, only gets you a compliance slip (piece of paper) that is good for a year. Does the CG there use stickers? If so, maybe the CG did a marina visit and boarded all boats in the yard. Anybody else have the same complaint? I kinda doubt that they would do that tho.... |

I should have taken a pic of them. But one was the trash dumping rules/restrictions for the Great Lakes and I believe the other one was for gray water discharge. I don't even have a sink or head. Really stupid and the more I think about them doing that, the more mad I get. |

I bet your marina thought it was being "proactive" and slapped em on every boat in the yard. Not cool. Should have asked ya. Are they hard to remove? I would have a very nice chat with management about boarding boats withought permission. I bet you won't be the only one... |

I would want a good explanation as to why someone (marina) slapped two stickers on my boat's windshield without my consent. If the marina thought for whatever reason that your boat had to have the stickers, then why not leave the stickers in an envelope on your boat seat with an explanation as to why they where needed to be visible on your windshield? Mike. |

Thanks. That confirms my exact thoughts as well. |

Also, they were not on my windshield, but rather on the fiberglass below my gage cluster. So they had to go in my boat in order to install them. |

I can't imagine the CG boarding a boat in storage....kind of like a Trooper checking your blinkers when car in garage and you at work. I would ask what's up for sure. They may have had an over eager employee thinking they were helping. I would be hostile too..you pay out the nose for that secure storage and if they're not boarding for purpose of protecting your property...then stay out. |

The Coast Guard is not going to board a boat in storage and put stickers on it, it is the owners responsibility to make sure they follow the regulations. I would not think a marina would do it unless they put them on the wrong boat. I would definitely ask them about it. |

I am going +1 on this and too add that if they don't peel off in two minutes without any damage and a quick wipe clean, they get to pay the professional to come in and do it. |

Bear in mind that regulations DO require having placards like that installed on most boats. I can't recall whether they're required on boats that don't have the facilities or not. I'd guess the requirement is more size-related not equipment. Because it's not just the owner/operator that those placards are designed to notify... it's guests too. It would certainly offend me to have someone board my boat and slap things on it without my permission. Not sure how much I'd get my shorts wadded up about it though. Consider that you need the marina personnel. Being too much of an ass about something tends to leave a lasting impression with the worker bees, if you know what I mean. Yeah, if they did it they were probably wrong. But I'd guess it was a lowly grunt "told" to do it. Just how pissed off do you want that same lowly grunt when you have them doing something else for you? Just sayin... I'd take it up with marina management. Ask why they felt it was appropriate, ask they not do it again on your boat and suggest that it might be a bad idea to do it anyone else's either. Then get some Goof Off, peel them off and put whatever's required in places you prefer. |
