Hey all, Just tuned up the boat last night. New Plugs , new dist cap and rotor button. The dist cap was corroded bad and there was hardly anything left of the rotor button. I am hoping this would be the cause of robbing some power.Wanted to know what some of you guys think as far as if I need to adjust anything on the carb, too lean or too rich. Let me know what you think.

Since the rest of the ignition system was in bad shape you were not getting a hot spark to those plugs. You can leave the carb as is, run it a few times and then re- check. They look pretty much the same as mine do even with the carb set right. A little rich is better than too lean for a marine engine.

ya the plugs looked very consistent. Dirty but consistent. After looking at the Rotor button and Dist , I was surprised the thing ran as smooth as it did, It just felt like I wasnt getting all the power I should. Hoping this was the culprit.

A new set of ignition wires will do a lot for you as well. Might as well change them, if you've got one end unplugged you are half way there!!!!!

Ya I was thinking about that, the wires are stainless and looked good, thought I would see how she runs with the new plugs and cap, then decide. What do Marine plug wires run price wise?

Hi Todd,

How many hours on your 5.7GL?
Did you go OEM for the cap & rotor, or aftermarket?
May I ask what this cost you?

I have 489 hours on the ol girl. I went with Quicksilver Cap and button, and NGK Plugs. I think it was around $65 for all of it. The cap was $35 of the $65, I cant remember what the exact cost of the rotor button and the plugs.

I had 340 when I bought the boat 1 year ago, and 430 now. I would be happy if I can pass 500 by the spring time :D

I wonder who has the most hours? I think I will start a thread about that:
