I need to know if polyurethane would be a goog idea or bad to paint with on my Horizon 220 the previuos owner never buffed or waxed it and i would like fresh paint either way please let me know what you guys think anything would be greatly appreciated

Unless it's just damaged beyond belief, you can probably get it repaired cheaper than having it painted. |

I appreciate the response is there a way anyway you can be more specific possibly. only reason I ask is I heard that polyurethane paint doesn't need a lot of maintenance at all.let me know what you think thanks for the response |

Perhaps you could post a picture and comment on what the issue is with the paint? Is it faded or oxidized, or is it just that you want a fresh paint-job? |

About 1/3 of a century ago, I repainted my 16' ski boat with automotive lacquer in two-tone color. I mixed a fine glitter into both colors. The glitter made the finish feel like 140 grit sandpaper. After a full cure (4+ days), I did a heavy coat of clear urethane over the whole thing. The clear urethane (PPG "Delthane" as I recall) did a great job flowing and covering the roughness of the lacquer/glitter. As a matter of fact, when I saw it the next morning, I thought it was still wet, but it was dry. I had that boat for 20 more years with hardly any fading or cracking. (I did keep it covered most of the time) Clear Urethane or PolyUrethane over lacquer or enamel is an interesting option for multicolor paint jobs including air-brushed artwork, as your topcoat (clear) would not have any masking lines. In more modern times, I hear of people using IMRON (a polyurethane?) on boats and airplanes with great success. Usually this is with color coats and no clear coat. There may be suggestions on repairing your gelcoat. Painting a whole boat is no small task... your 20' boat would be about like painting 2 to 3 cars. |

A serious buffing/restoration of your gel coat by a fiberglass shop will cost several hundred dollars. But that's a lot less than a good Imron or similar paint job. Of course, some would just prefer to have paint and that's fine too, I'm just saying it's probably not the only option. I agree pics would be good. |

I had our old '88 sprayed in Imron 2 years ago because the gel coat was beyond saving. It looks great but it is very expensive and not a do it yourself project because the fumes from the paint is very toxic. There are other paints that can be applied by do it yourselfers such as Interlux Brightside and Interlux Perfection. |

Pay some guys a good few hundred bucks to give the hull a good workout with wetsanding and buffing, you'd be amazed. Most of the time it will come back brand new. After that, if it doesn't (gotta do it anyways if you want a good smooth surface to paint on), yeah time for some Imron. Funny, my father has tried everything on his sailboats here in Florida to keep them nice. All the big named marine paints just don't last and turn to chalk. Want to know what does? Semi-gloss latex house paint. |

Semi-gloss latex house paint. Exterior house paint is water based----are you saying to paint a boat with water based latex?surely I read this wrong cuz that's a stupid idea. My doors are painted with that in my house, but I don't throw them in the pond. Another option is wrapping the boat...create your custom design...not sue of the cost though |

water based, but I'm pretty sure that when it rains the paint on your house doesn't fall off. |

Ric.....yes it does! It peels and cracks and falls off. That's why you repaint a house smartass. Maybe you suggest nailing hardiplank to the sides of the boat. Why don't you test a water based latex on your boat or riceburner soccer mom car and report back. I also don't cruise my house thru the water at 40 mph. Oil based paint isn't used on exterior because it will grow mold on wood |

Repengr...thanks for finding that thread. I thought that was a neat idea. I wasn't crazy about busy design but turned out nice. I'm not sure about durability and bubbling, but looks like a clean application. |

Ok hear goes. The wraps are printed on 3M vynal then as the print comes out of the large bed printer a top coat "clear coat" protective coat is applied over the printed image. This vynal is now ready for application. The aplication takes a couple days for a large item like a boat and large cars. The material can be stretched and manipulated, heat is applied to adhere to contours and complex shapes. Including design, material, install this detailed wrap was $1,800. Now I have painted boat that I have restored in the past. And will be painting a 15' fishing boat that I am restoring this winter. Over the past 15 year with advances in Two Part Polyurethane . Paint has become a common item in the boating industry as the current 2part paints are extremely durable and withstand the abuse similar to gel cot. Not with that said the two are not the same. Most all high end boats that do not come from a mold. Aka custom hand built boats use paint. This is a wrap  This is a wrap that a buddies shop did. It is blue chrome material.   Now these are all hand built boats and paint.
