The lower Niagara River was frozen across to Canada from the power project to the mouth of Lake Ontario. The old timers tell tales of walking across to Canada from here. That would be a quite a walk considering the ice moves at the same speed as the water current underneath (4 knots!). The sound the ice makes as it scrapes together is very spooky. |

A friend of mine is on the border and he says those snowmobiles trying to cross over are a pain in the arse. |

Quote: One good thing about all this cold weather is maybe the lake levels will be up this year. ![]() I sure hope so because the low water levels have been very concerning the last few years. Hopefully a wet spring will finish the job! |

The Muddy Mo freezes and frequently results in Ice Dams (or Jams) which can result in flooding if they don't get broken up in time. That's a lot of flow, and happens very quickly. |

I can confirm that water has risen (Huron-Mich) substantially over the last several weeks. The ice is about 10" closer to the bottom of the dock than is was when it was first frozen hard. |

Looks like this terrible winter will pay off as the Great Lakes could be rising substantially!! I remember this time last year worrying if we would be able to access Lake Michigan from our marina because of a shallow channel. http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/U/US_GREAT_LAKES_WATER_LEVELS?SITE=AP&SECTION=HOME&TEMPLATE=DEFAULT&CTIME=2014-03-05-23-07-43 |

Lake Champlain was 99% iced over, but that was a few weeks ago. First time since 2007 I think. Right now the ice in the bay out in front of our house is about 10" thick. It seems like forever to May 15th!!! |
