Well I picked up the boat from winter storage, it's been in storage for 18 months. The boat is fine but when I got it home (16 miles) there is brake fluid leaking on to the driveway. Only a few spots, it only leaked when activated by the surge brake, it's not dripping now. Could it be the reservoir was over filled as there is wet fluid around the cap?

Doubt it was from being over-filled, but I guess it is possible. I would say it is probably the master cylinder leaking out the seal where the rods are. This is where mine went bad. If I can remember correctly, there is a rubber boot on the front that should be dry. When I removed mine it was wet. Replaced the MC with one from trailerpartsdepot.com and had been good ever since.

Thanks Seth, I will give them a call in the morning to make sure that I order the right part. Thanks for the link. Can you tell me if it was a relatively easy fix or an involved pain in the ass? I am thinking that bleeding it will be the hard part.

It was not hard. I have the tie down LP70 actuator. Not sure what you have. 4 bolts hold the master cylinder in place. I had to remove the actuator and then pull the master cylinder out the front. The only challenge I ran into was that the reverse lockout solenoid could not be attached to the new MC without removing the MC cover first. This was not a big deal, it sealed up without issue. I don't recall if I used some form-a-gasket when putting the cover back on the MC or not. I kind of feel like I did not. Just pay attention to how the emergency cable wraps around the MC. Bleeding is easy. My MC has a dampener that must be primed first by slowly compressing and expanding the actuator three times. I gravity bleed first by filling and leaving the MC lid off. Jack up the tongue and open the bleeders until I get good flow. Then start with closest wheel to the MC and bleed by pumping and holding pressure using a screw driver under the actuator while someone else operates the bleeder screw. I have had a lot of practice. After I bought my boat the MC went out. The brake hose that runs down the tongue blew. And a brake line ruptured near a caliper.

Thanks Seth, I have the same Model 70LP trailer. The kit from trailerpartsdepot.com seems to have a different part # on there website, but I guess it's the same. $87.67. I have been dreading this job and knew it would come along, probably a $250 in a trailer shop, so I will have a go. Are there instructions in the kit from trailerparts? I see that it states using Permatex 51845 for a gasket, did you use that? Sorry to be a pain but I don't want it stuck on my drive in pieces and have to get it towed, Ray

I don't recall what if anything I used for a gasket. The MC will come all sealed up. You may not need to crack it open depending on how your reverse bypass solenoid is hooked up. I just could not rotate mine onto the MC with the cover on. My dad's an auto mechanic so I was just following his directions so I can't recall what I used to seal it up. The gasket may have been fine as is and I might have just re-sealed it. I think the MC is slightly different based on whether you have disk or drum brakes. Make sure you order the correct one.
