Post subject:  Neat Idea for Dock
I cannot take credit for thinking this one up but I felt I should pass this on. To keep the dock walk way neat, these worked great to hold the power cables and hose. The power cords fit in a 3/4" PEX clips and the hose fits in a 1" clip. Very cheap at your local home improvement store. Cords are easy to clip in and remove.

I would say a VERY BAD idea. Definitely not where a boat could damage a cable causing a ground. Major problems at LOTO with kids dying getting electrocuted while playing at the dock.... And these are from other docks in the coves.

A couple of slip neighbors do it that way as well and I never thought about how it could get damaged (I guess the Corp doesn't either). Come to think about it, one guy ran his pair of 50's under the dock. :shock: I sure hope he fastened them tight because a lot of people swim at the docks.

The yellow wires look like shore power cords. If thats the case, than its OK. You should always turn the breaker off to your shore cords when you leave the slip. Wires for the power stations are 3 or 4 times bigger than that.

We build our own docks. Power station wires run inside the dock itself. Two large cables, one for each side. Water on the outside, more like the above pic.

Maybe put it in PVC and clamp it...that would protect wire coating. They run wires in water all time...make sure plug in is ground fault protected.

I have never seen a 30 or 50 amp GFI plugs at a marina.

Yes, wires are put in the water all the time. We have 2" cables coming off our ramp on to the dock. Because of the tides, there more in the water than they are out. With the right type of wire it passes code.

Wow!! Not saying that this is wrong because I don't know your marina's rules but this would be a big issue where we are because we swim around the docks. Do you big water boaters swim near the docks like us lake boaters or avoid them like the plague due to this variance in tides and electrical conductivity? I have a feeling your answer will support the fact that most electrical water deaths occur in the South. Or, do they?

I haven't known any one to swim around docks for that reason. Your boat may be fine...but what about the boat next to you.

Wires like these are in shallow water because there coming off the ramp and onto the dock. So you really don't swim near them, but again, there rated just for that. Most problems happen because of poor wiring on the boat itself. Thus we have "Galvanic Isolators". Stray currents can come off of someones boat and you can get hit. Because of this, most club or marinas do not allow swimming or have areas for swimming.

I have a similar setup at my dock. Our dock ends aren't quite as nice, so my lines are just zip-tied to undercarriage of our docks, but it accomplishes the same thing.. We swim around our docks all the time. Highly doubt our docks are wired to todays code standards, but everyone still swims around them.. Probably not the smartest thing folks could be doing, but thus far, no problems..

Around our area, I think swimming arounds docks in marinas that have shorepower is pretty much viewed as not acceptable. Potential risks of injury from hydro is one thing, but boat traffic coming into or out of marina basin is another. A lot of our marinas are also off of rivers or channels from the lake and most people wouldn't be interested in swimming in them anyways.

I wouldn't have a problem doing what jnizi did in above picture. If possible, I'd try and route lines though so that my boat's rub rail (swim platform) wouldn't hit the lines if boat moved back far enough to come in contact with the dock.
