I am trying to decide if I should replace my old carpet which is beginning to flake off the black backing. My boat is a 2001 Horizon 180. I want the bow piece and main cabin area.
I am considering a replacement carpet with the teak looking lines or SeaDeck which is a foam based product that also can be cut to look like teak. I really liked the idea of the SeaDeck as it sticks down and does not hold sand or dirt. I am tired of pulling out the carpets to hose them out after every use.

I'm not sure of the cost for carpet but just got an eye popping quote from SeaDeck to do the bow/main cabin and swim platform of $1600 Yeooooowwwwwchhhhh
I have asked for a revised quote without the swim platform to see if I can get under $1000 but that still seems like an awful lot for such a small boat. If I had to guess the square footage I would say it is 60 sqft.
I haven't got a quote on carpet yet but will probably start looking. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

My carpet (removable) is also flaking apart - I actually like the non-skid fiberglass and I'm not really looking to replace the carpet. I'm guessing that your carpet is glued down? Another option might be to resurface the deck with non-skid and keep it low maintenance....

It's a snap in carpet but has a black rubber backing. I think it is the original factory carpet so it's 13 years old.

Carpet from http://www.snapincarpets.com is probably about $500 for your size boat, cut and edged. You install the snaps yourself to match the existing locations.

The teak striped carpet costs a little more. There is one company (https://www.corinthian-marine-carpet.com/) that has teak carpet with black stripes instead of white stripes. I think the white stripes would show dirt way too soon.

I have priced replacements for mine, but have not done it yet. My 14yo carpet looks OK, except for the backing is half gone.

Has anyone tried to repairing the carpet? My carpet is like new except for the same flaking. I was reading on other sites of all sorts of rubber fixes but I can't tell if they last. Some say they don't stick and some say they stick. I found Plastidip, a spray can thats not too expensive but am afraid it may stick to the fiberglass.

I tried the Plastidip Spray on the piece of carpet over my Ski Locker 6 months ago. It took a few heavy coats and about 1 whole can to do that area, so I decided that was too much effort for a temporary fix. However, I will say that it did glue everything back together, and did not stick to the ski locker. I haven't taken it up for a while, so I am not sure how it is holding up.

It might be a good solution if you only have some areas that are flaking.

Why don't you just leave it bare as non-skid? Let's face it, if you swim a lot and/or have kids, carpets do not work because they are too much work and they don't last or create mold. Either go bare or go with one of the permanent decks (i.e. SeaDeck or faux teak). Carpet does not work for the active boater.

ETA - I see you are thinking about a permanent deck so disregard my reply.

I agree with the last post, anything you put over the deck will hold moisture and if your boat has a plywood cored deck it makes rot more likely. Polyester gelcoat is not water proof and if moisture sits under there all winter long eventually it can get into the wood core esp if there are holes drilled for seat mounts that are not sealed which is usually the case.

LouC, are you saying this could happen with one of the permanent decks too? I could see water intrusion being an issue with a shoddy insulation but many do go with the permanent deck these days. Might be too early to tell since these faux decks are relatively new.

It all depends on what core material was used and if they use vinyl ester gel coat vs polyester. Poly resin on top of plywood is not going to do well if there is moisture on top of it much of the time. If they use a composite deck core material combined with vinyl ester gelcoat then its less of a worry.
I leaned a lot from replacing the deck in an old boat and the main thing I learned is that carpet has no place in an open boat....plywood rots easily, holes should for screws should be filled, etc....
It also depends on how long you think the boat should last before repairs are needed. Even cheap construction will last 10 years but if you want to keep it 20 or more then it has to be built to a higher standard...

Well, I like my snap in carpet (over gelcoat), but I am careful to keep the boat covered and dry. I remove the carpet to dry if it gets wet. The carpet has only been wet 4 or 5 days in 2 years.

Got the quote back for SeaDeck to do just the cabin area. Still over $1200 or about $30 per sqft. Too rich for me.
I made another pattern last night and am sending it to snapincarpets.com for an estimate on the synthetic weave teak with black stripes and one other weave. Hopefully they are under $500 as that is about my pain level :D
The synthetic weave they show looks and feels very nice and is not absorbant like the berber I have. Should hose right off without trapping sand like the regular carpet. They sent me samples so I could do a touch and feel test.

I got a quote from snapincarpets.com for my 210 Horizon. They have the pattern already buty $1200-$1400 for the marine weave! Seemed a little high. The cost per sq ft must be through the roof!

Check out these guys out. It looks like they are meant for snap in so I am not sure it will work for you. A friend of mine used them and it was only $300 for a 32' cruiser.
