Post subject:  maiden voyage
well took the boat out for the first time ever ( for me anyways)started out fine got out about 200 yards
then died. Worked on it for a few, will fire up but wont stay running, accelerator pump is working dont think its getting enough fuel flow. have to pick up some filters and try tomorrow. been sitting for a while
must have loosened up crap in tank. not a lot of boats out on the water had to go thru 5 flares till some one seen it to tow me to the dock. But I can say my boats on the water

When you take off the filter that's on there dump it out into a glass jar and let it sit. See if its gas with a layer of water on the bottom (you'll see it separate). If so you might need to take out the sending unit for the gas tank and pump out the gas from the bottom of the tank till you get to gas with no water in it.
You might also have an anti siphon valve that is rusted shut, this is a valve that keeps gas from siphoning into the bilge if the fuel line leaks (the fitting is on the top of the gas tank and the fuel line to the pump is connected to it).
Every year I dump out my filters to check for water in the gas or other problems. If it is really bad it might be time to get the tank pumped out and professionally cleaned.
And make sure the fuel vent is not clogged. If air can't get in gas can't get of the tank.

went out today pulled the filters . poured the fuel from the filter into a glass container and it did separate
but it wasnt water. it has to be bad gas , pumped out 20 gallons from the bottom of tank let it run for an hour on the dock will take it back out tomorrow after noon see how she does

Not making light of your situation but did you really go thru 5 flares when you were only 200 yards from the dock? Why didn't you just yell to someone? :lol:

yes really . 200 yards from the launch not the marina. nobody was at the launch all out fishing in the coves, this was 8:30 at night

You took your maiden voyage of a old used boat that sat in storage for god knows how long with zero maintenance done using the old gas at 830pm?

Have you been not taking anything in that we've been telling you or reading? Drain all the gas. Replace the anti-siphon valve. Replace all rubber fuel lines. Rebuild the carb. Replace fuel filters. Change the oil
in the engine. Change the outdrive oil. New water pump impeller. New plugs, wires, cap, rotor. Replace all rubber water hoses on the engine. New thermostat. New drive/accessory belts.

Once all that is done, go for another ride.

This is on a lake or river? Any water cops etc? If so invest in a VHF radio here in the Long Island region just about all boats have either a hard mount or a hand held. We have a handheld that we put in the little 10' Walker Bay when we take it out, just in case. That boat we keep the oars in so we can always row back LOL...
I would go over that fuel system carefully. Not only do you not want to break down, but you also do not want fuel leaks. As ric said I'd consider replacing the anti siphon, use a new gasket on that cover for the tank sending unit, consider changing all the 25 year old hoses...replace the gas cap (the rubber gaskets dry out and can let water in). With a boat that old, eventually you wind up changing everything if you keep it long enough and want it to be reliable.
After you get done with the fuel system, take a look at all your cooling hoses too. Esp the little one....from the transom mount...to the P/S cooler...if that fails...or pops off....it will fill the bilge with water faster than you can say oh Sh!t and overheat the boat in about 5 min....
A 5/32nds box end or socket will tighten those clamps up nicely, better than a screwdriver....

Soft rubber hoses have a lifespan. Typically 5 years is the maximum age you want to be using a fuel line for. The water hoses will dry rot/crack they don't have a service schedule. Squeeze em. IF you see cracks, replace.

The bellows only last 5 on the outdrive. 10 if you're lucky.

I did all the repairs of the hoses carb , changed the oils belts ,thermostat fuel sending unit bellows did it all .ric, god does no how long it has been stored , I think you posted you had a bad gas problem .Ill take a maiden voyage any time I can swim I dont freak out or panic I have a phone. was just putting in the water to get at the dock. not like i was planning a weekend trip. cant test a boat without putting it in the water. it can run perfect on the trailer
Louc Its a lake . has a vhf hook up but cant get the old owner to meet me to get it from him. i will have to pick up a new one

took the boat out today and every thing was fine.pulled the filter off twice nothing but gas. must of had something in the filler tube or vent when i filled it up. they are the only parts i didnt mess with

Good job. Now run it every other weekend to keep her young. I have a lot of rubber on my 14 year old boat that doesn't meet ric's specs either (knock on wood). The best maintenance to a boat is using it.

I plan on using it as much as we can
. it only has 286 hours on it. i hope to put at least half of that on it this summer, weather permitting.

This by far is the best statement that could ever be said about boat ownership. Letting a boat sit unused does more damage than using it.

When you said "it wasn't water", It sounds like you were seeing "Phase Separation", which is what happens to ethanol which is contaminated with water. I had this problem 2 years ago in this thread: http://www.smwebhead.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=9901
One cup of water in E-10 gas can probably cause a couple gallons of phase separated crap that you might be describing as bad gas.
I had to have the tank pumped out. I also found that the water was getting in through the fuel cap...which was missing it's O-ring.

rpengr that could be it . I took some of it and it would burn but didnt have the same flash as the fresh fuel. then i did a test by addig water to it .would milk up a little then clear out again. water never really sepoated from the mixture.
