5.7 Volvo/Penta in a 2004 Horizon.

In the process of chasing mystery water in the bilge I ran the engine with the hatch open to check for leaks several times, never finding anything. Last time, though, I overrode the shifter and ran the engine up to about 2,000 RPM or so, and noticed water coming out of the bottom of the impeller housing. I just had a new impeller installed by a professional mechanic. He said this leak indicates that the seal on the pump shaft is bad and the pump housing will need to be replaced. He's getting a price, but I'm guessing $$$.

So, does this sound legit? Or could he have screwed up a seal (o-ring) on the impeller install?

Is it truly a "new pump" problem, or can the seal be renewed?

That pump looks like one of the few things on the engine that is fairly easy to get to, so I'd like to save a little and replace it myself, if it needs it. I haven't been home to read the Volvo book yet, but it looks like some hose clams, a bracket, and maybe a pulley puller. Is there something I don't see that makes this a bigger job?

As always, thank you kindly for sharing your experience.

If you search for 5.7 volvo penta impeller on Youtube, you might be able to troubleshoot it.

There is a wealth of info on the bigger (>3.0) VP's on Youtube, not much on my 3.0 though.

A raw water pump can leak from the o-ring, but could also leak from the shaft seal. The seal is only about $10. Both the O-ring and Shaft seal are replaceable. If the bearing goes bad, then they will say you need a new raw water pump $300+ because Volvo does not show any further breakdown beyond the shaft seal, o-ring, and impeller.

The Bearing CAN be replaced with some intermediate mechanical skills and tools.

I rebuilt my Volvo Brass Raw Water Pump, including replacing the steel ball bearing with a SST bearing of equivalent size. Here is my complete write up:

Shaft seal and O-Ring can be replaced, I have done it. I think it cost me about $8 bucks and about a hour of my time. DO NOT let Mr Professional Mechanic talk you into a new pump housing, they are stupid expensive. Now obviously if the bearing is shot, unless you have the ability to remove and press in bearings, then yeah, ya gotta bite the bullet and get the new pump.

We had a similar issue on after i changed the impeller & was still over heating. Brought the pump to the dealer & they took one look at the pump & said instantly it needed to be replaced. Said they could tell it was a river boat & the amount of sand & soot in the water has the same effect as sand blasting the inside of the pump. Said they see it all the time on boats that are used in rivers or beached a lot. Pumps have lots of suction & pull it in. Previous owner of my boat used it on the Mississippi. Bought new pump & all was good. You could plainly see the difference between the new & old. Volvo pumps are not cheap.

That's true, a badly worn or scared pump cavity will require a new pump. But a leaky shaft seal is repairable, unless the shaft is damaged. A bad bearing is also replaceable, as I showed in the link above.

Super! Great write-up. Thanks for the source link, too. I haven't found a Volvo Penta parts source locally, other than the mechanic.

Sounds like it is definitely worth trying the repair if the metal is in good shape.

For VP parts, there is always the Volvo Penta Store:
http://www.volvopentastore.com/

And once you have the correct part # you can put it into Google or Ebay to find it much cheaper. I did not follow this advice when I bought mine, because I are smart, apparently.

My mechanic stills says, "There are no parts for the water pump." Is there anything that links that seal to the pump? I just want to convince him. The price for a new pump is just under $400  so I'm definitely going to break open the old pump and try the seal.

Seems like even if I'm paying full shop rate to a pro the job would be quick enough to not be worth tossing a pump that is otherwise in good shape!

Here is where the seal is called out for my VP engine:

Here ya go: http://www.marinepartsexpress.com/vp_sch_fs.html

Tell your mechanic to get bent.

I found this:

http://www.volvopentastore.com/Seawater-Pump/dm/cart_id.054492252--session_id.946000323--store_id.366--view_id.775930

by going to http://www.volvopentastore.com/, click on "Genuine Volvo Penta Parts", click on "2000 - 2006 Red Engines (313 engines)", click on "5.7GXI-F", and click on "Seawater Pump".

Sent it to my mechanic and he wrote back, "You need part number 21214596.There are no parts made to repair it. The other parts have been replaced ."

I dunno, maybe Volvo was having complaints from mechanics who were replacing the seal but not realizing the bearing was damaged, so the pump quickly would develop other problems, leading to unhappy customers.

I'm ordering a seal, and will look for a source for the bearing. I'm guessing it will be bad.

That part number he gave you is for the entire sea water pump, about $400 bucks. Please don't fall for this guys laziness and idiocy.
Go to this link: http://www.marinepartsexpress.com/
Enter this part number in the "Search By Part Number" window: 827247
Pay the $9.86, get the seal. Repair pump. Enjoy your boat.

Oh, and tell your mechanic to get bent from me to.
