In a letter to vendor partners in Canada, West Marine has announced that it will be closing its Canadian stores as their leases expire.

Within the next year, seven of the 10 leases on West Marine's stores in Canada will expire. West Marine says that currently none of the seven are meeting the company's ‘minimum hurdles.' The remaining stores will also close as their leases expire in the following years.
West Marine currently has locations in Vancouver, BC; Richmond, BC; Nanaimo, BC; Sidney, BC; Victoria, BC; Toronto, Ontario; Oakville, Ontario; Barrie, Ontario; Midland, Ontario; and Kingston Ontario

Probably not a big deal to most of you, since WM did not have a very large presence anyway. Just thought I would pass along the info.

I always wondered how a stand alone marine accessory shop like the one in Barrie could survive.

Turns out it can't.

I bought my Xantrex inverter at the one in Toronto. Stuff is expensive, even more so than the US pricing on the website.

Its still sad that they are leaving, one less option

Closest WM to me is in Oakville, Ontario, about an hour and a half drive away. Funny I have purchased more marine items at the West Marine in Mount Clemens, Michigan when we boat over there. WM does have some good sale items from time to time, but most items can be found more local and cheaper.

Too bad they are closing though, I would of liked one closer to home since they do price match.

Thanks for the info Cap'n.

Thanks Cap'n Morgan for thinking of us, always appreciated.

I was only in the Barrie store once, and like most, I found it to be expensive. It's hard for a store like that to compete with a lot of the web options that are out there.

Thanks so much Cap"n. That quite possibly saved me a trip to Kingston some day.

Never shopped there because they weren't locally owned and expensive.

Really it's too bad - I don't like their prices, but with one 10 minutes from my house I go there when I need something quickly. I will miss the Oakville store. I've also used the Toronto store in a pinch when visiting TO Islands.

Most items in our Marina chandlery are less expensive than in West Marine in Midland Ontario. Should WM pull out of Midland I wonder how that will affect our Chandlery prices ?
