I need to replace my seats in my 1988 205 Sundowner. Does any one know if the box in which the seats sit are 10 inch or 12 inch?

10 or 12 inch wide, long, tall? I don't have the "headknocker" back to back, fold out seats. Have you considered switching out for pedestal seats? They open up a lot of room in the cockpit.

I have back to back fold out seats. The boat is stored away in the boat yard so I can not measure them. I need to replace them but I do nmot know if they are 10 or 12 inch or does it really matter.

I agree with switching to the pedestal seats, they will give a lot more room in the cockpit. You will have to remove the seat boxes though and have to either re-do the carpeting or (preferably) get rid of it all together and gelcoat or coat the deck with a marine deck liner.
I have the pedestals in my '88 Horizon (same hull different cap design) and there is a lot of room between them and the rear bench seat.
