Over the winter I pulled a suitcase down from the garage shelf overhead and my boat tabletop fell to the floor cracking on the corner. I have the 3 large pieces and they almost fit perfect. I know I can't just edge glue them, I'll need some sort of method to stiffen the patch and hold it to the table from behind. Does anyone have any experience with this type of repair who can offer what I can use and what method?

Ouch! Don't ya hate it when that happens! You might edge glue the pieces in place and use some epoxy on the back side to form a doubler. I would recommend sanding the back side before applying epoxy. Or you could use some fiberglass cloth and resin. You might also look at replacing the table top wit something from ebay or ??? |

If that table is as old as your boat (not that mine is much younger), I would say it is time for a new one anyway. |

Unfortunately I got the table only 2 years ago from my college age daughters as a Christmas gift. It's very large at 34 x 26 and I priced it at over $100 to replace. I'm sure I can make an acceptable repair, just not sure of the technique to use. I'm thinking edge glue the pieces and then a glob of something on the back for strength. |

3m makes a 2 part structural adhesive that I've used on automotive plastics; it is very strong. |

I would epoxy all the piece back and les it dry. Then on the back side, takes some fiberglass cloth end epoxy. The cloth will give it strength. |

Make sure whatever epoxy you buy says it works with ABS plastic. Very important. |

The best ABS glue is pipe cement from the plumbing department at the hardware store. Get some thin ABS sheet and glue it on the underside when you are done. It will be strong but pretty ugly! |

Thanks guys, I've edge glued it and it now tried some good old JB plastic weld epoxy that works with ABS on the back. It doesn't look too bad, have to see it when it dries. I'll post a photo of the end result. |
