Not sure if this was covered earlier, I looked briefly and I've been out of the country. There is a new engine option on the FW site. It's a catalyzed V6 240 with a max RPM of 5,800. That means they have a non-cat V6 225 (in limited quantities), a catalyzed V6 240, and a catalyzed V8 225.
I'm very interested to see the performance specs of the V8 225 vs the V6 240.

Yes the 240 V6 was introduced in January, shortly after the 200 V6. Testing has been promising.

I would rather have the new Mercruiser 250HP V6 . It is nearly an equal to the old 5.0L V8 it replaces.
The Volvo engines are all GM based. The Merc is not. In the next 2-3 years, all Mercruiser engines will no longer have anything from GM.

Which means what for parts availability and cost?


The days of a simple "truck" engine in a boat are gone, but how far do we really want to divert from that. Mercruiser does have some experience making their own engines....but it is hard to beat a SBC for simplicity and durability and ease of maintenance and parts availability.

Got it, thanks. I read about the engine but I guess I didn't think FW would use it, at least not right away. I also didn't realize that it ran 800-1,000 RPM's higher than the other Volvo's offered by FW.

For me on the merc, I would hold off on getting any "new from the ground up" engine for at least a few years.

Same thing was said when both manufacturer's added the mandatory Catalyst engines. It's been a few years now, and have heard virtually nothing about any reliability issues with the CAT's over that time period. Also, if you buy a new boat, choose Mercruiser power (recommended :wink: ), you can't hardly find any old school 5.0L V8 even offered anymore. So my Merc 5.0L V8 is now a collectors item :lol:

Not true. On Volvo's, the water pumps are much easier to get to for changing impellers.

I laughed when I serviced my dps drives, and the bravo 3's down from me were rotting away way faster.

Ditto on the impeller. As far as parts I can find any of the parts I have been looking for via easily accessible channels. If it's rush, my Four Winns dealer can get them for me in 24 hrs, that is if they do not have it in stock - And they usually have it in stock (If you want to pay 2x as much for it.)

The parts for my buddy's Merc are on backorder until mid may, so maybe it's just your side of the country that has the issue with Volvo.

How common is it for an SX Drive to lunch itself from too much HP, when compared to a Bravo 1? :idea:

Its not at all common, for one thing they were regularly paired with big block Chevrolets that put out 100 more ft lbs than just about any small block.
As far as the cat converter issue, in fresh water yes you will not have an issue. In salt water you eventually will. And just for sh!tz and giggles I priced out an OE Volvo system, close to
$3000 A SIDE!!!

And unlike vehicles, where the cats are covered under a fed warrentee till 8 years or 80,000 miles, when they go on a boat you are SOL. I don't think you can just eliminate them.
I think I better hurry up and get a new outboard for my next boat (lol) before they put cats on them too.
Its bad enough if you lose an impeller, or pick up a bag with an exhaust system that can then it over 300 *F, a cat system (I've monitored cat function and temps on my 07 Jeep with an OBD-II scanner) runs much much hotter than that. In a closed engine compartment surrounded by fiberglass, with rubber fuel lines....
