Well, towards the end of October I tool a little trip from Seattle to the east coast... Sure, I did some business while there (which made it cheap to travel), but I made it up to by far the greatest Four Winns dealer that I have ever contacted (for more details on who, you can PM me).

It's not like I didn't TRY to buy a boat from the local dealers in Seattle.... I really, really tried. But when the price difference was as high as it was (we're talking close to 10k when it's all said and done) -- I was left asking myself - am I stupid?

So I hunted around a bit.... came across another dealer... and had a fantastic experience. It was a little rough that the dealer I discovered happened to be across the country. But I figured heck - is there that big a difference whether it's 1k miles or 3k miles? Other than an extra couple hundred for shipping, not so much. The boat was ordered and delivered out east... I made it out personally to take the boat for a spin... sign papers... and proceed to buy a whole bunch of extra "stuff" that I know will come in handy during the summer. I found a shipper on http://www.uship.com.... and bam - a couple weeks later, boat is in my driveway.

The boat made it through the 3000+ mile trip gloriously... the shipper actually towed the boat on the trailer - and they noted that it was the best trailer/boat combo they had ever towed (out of 300+ tows). The dealer winterized everything, dropped the arch down, and shrink wrapped the heck out of it. All seems to look good - no damage during shipping that I could tell.

I wish I could post some pictures, but it looks like that feature is still shut off currently.

So... moral of the story --- the "service" that your local dealer offers is always a consideration -- but as a buyer you have to balance the "service" with the added cost sometimes. What makes it easier for me, is that the local service dealer also isn't really that great -- I have a local custom shop who is VP certified that will be doing my work... and as for warranty work that I may need the local dealer for -- well, that's what customer surveys are for if I have any issues.

As buyers -- don't get burned... some sucker is going to pay $$$$$$ way more for a leftover 07 Horizon 240 than I paid for an 08 with more options. Maybe I should post a sign at the boat show in January....

Now if April would just get here.......

Cougarcruiser...

Congratulations! So happy to hear the transport went well and all the effort and planning paid off. It sounds like you did your homework. People thought I was nuts for buying my last Sea Ray from a dealership so far away but I never had one regret. Of course, we want pictures! Photobucket is really easy to learn and it works beautifully with this site so I'd encourage you to check it out so you can start showing off your new baby. And yeah, April just feels like an eternity away right now.

Congrats again!

And a couple more just for fun.... I was super shocked at the engine compartment - and it looks like Volvo now does an oil filter cartridge system... trimp pump built into the drive... everything is compact and attached to the motor...

Maybe I should have gotten the 8.1, but in late October in heavy chop we still rocked about 55mph on the speedo... now - I'm not sure how accurrate that is, but it was a hell of a ride.

One word: absolutely, completely, freaking BEAUTIFUL. You have the same exact color scheme as my brother's 220. I LOVE the way it looks in the sunshine. You're right about the engine compartment, I was equally impressed with mine.

Stupid question time: where are the batteries in the 240? Do they put them under one of the rear hatches?

The batteries are all on the port side (left,passenger)... However, the switch is on the starboard side (driver side). I've heard stories about a balancing issue for the boat, but considering I'm a hefty fellow (340lbs) -- and my wife is about 125... I need all the extra battery weight I can get on the left side. ha! The batteries are both contained in boxes... and they are the interstate deep cycles. should last me a good couple years hopefully.

oh man, I love this boat... I can't wait for spring, it'll be like another Christmas when I unwrap it!

I am rethinking my decision to get the upgraded stereo... I didn't think the 1k was worth it.... now I've told my wife that you can't have a boat that looks this good without improving the tunes... we'll keep the sony head unit, satellite, radio and stuff... but I'll be adding at least 1 10'' woofer... and replacing the stock sony speakers... and getting an amp or 2.

For the money they want, you can get a lot better equipment if you are installing it yourself and probably spend a little less than that anyway.

I wonder if FW has finally begun to designate the port side as the proper location for the batteries, or if your dealer has had to move enough of them that they just do that on their own now. This is a change FW should have made before the end of the '05 model year, but they were still having them put on the stbd side as recently as late '06.

Cougar - I love your color scheme. I've seen other pic's of your boat on some of the other posts, but I just came across this one (more pic's). I think I saw on one of your other posts where you said you wanted the ss version, which we picked because we love the sporty looks, but man your boat looks awesome! I did a similar thing when we bought our waverunner several years ago. I drove out of state to save several thousands. Unfortunately, my experience at the selling dealer was nothing like yours. Spring is almost upon us. It was 80 this sat in N. TX. They issued a winter storm watch for N. TX this afternoon. We could get up to 3 in of snow!
