Boaters in Ontario caught drinking can now lose their motor vehicle driver's licence for up to a year. A private member's bill, passed without opposition yesterday and was signed into law immediately. Under the new legislation, police and courts can suspend motor vehicle licences for boaters who are drunk or have elevated levels of alcohol in their blood. Boaters who blow close to the legal limit on a breathalyser test can have their licence suspended for 12 hours. Those convicted of being drunk while boating can lose their licence for a year. The bill was passed in a flurry of last-minute activity on the final day of the legislative session.
