I'm in a mountainous, remote location with no cell service and no one monitoring VHF marine radios. I'm thinking about buying a DeLorme inReach Explorer for the lake and also for a few hikes each summer. It has no voice capability, but has a distress button that contacts a command center via Iridium satellites. It can also do two-way text messaging for emergency contact or fun.

Anybody here have one or know someone who does? I'd love to hear if they really work before spending $380, plus seasonal usage fees.

I carry something very similar when out on my snowmobile.

I think it's great!

I carry the inReach SE (little brother to Explorer). I had the original inReach before that. I think it offers incredible piece of mind. However, I didn't buy it for boating. I bought it because I regularly take a bunch of 15-year old boys camping in the wilderness (Varsity Scouts). But I take it boating as a side benefit. Be sure to buy the floatation pouch if boating is your primary use. Otherwise, it will sink (while remaining waterproof). :)
