Post subject:  New CBP Cruising License

Do any Canadians understand the new Cruising license that's been put in place?

What I think I know:
- Boats over 30' no longer need to have the DTOP decal
- You need to call before you leave a US port (either to go back to Canada or another US port)
- The first time in US water each year you need to ask for a cruising license

I get lost when I think about how to obtain the license - DTOP I could do online, but this new license is supposed to come from a Port of Entry - of which I'm not sure there are any near me (western Lake Ontario). I don't believe Tuscarora State Park where we have used the video phone to sign in would be where I would get one. Maybe I can drive (car) to a Port of Entry to get the license? Now that we have NEXUS, we were able to just land at the marina in the US and call in our arrival.

Anyone have any insight into this? I'm going to give CBP a call tomorrow as well.

Steve.

Sorry, I don't have any firsthand knowledge of your questions. I took a quick look at the Customs and Border Protection (CBP) website, as well as the DTOPS website, and did not see anything about 30+ foot private vessels no longer needing DTOPS stickers?

CBP website, Pennsylvania ports of entry
https://www.cbp.gov/travel/pleasure-boats-private-flyers/pleasure-boat-locations/pa-nj-de#
DTOPS website
https://dtops.cbp.dhs.gov/main/login_internet.jsp

A phone call to your nearest port of entry would probably get you the quickest answer. That's what I do with my private aircraft questions (travel USA to Bahamas).

Interesting, I have not heard anything about a new Cruising License. We ordered our DTOP decal a couple of months back so we'd have the Decal for our first boat trip of the season across the lake to Michigan next weekend.

I'll be interested in what you find out when calling CBP. Thanks for posting.

Mike.

This page has some details, but just enough to prompt more questions. I didn't get a chance to call today but will tomorrow and will report back.

We cross many times a summer so I want to get it right.
