Hello everybody! What do you guys use for taking your pictures? I have an older Kodak camera that works excellent but is big and bulky. I am looking for a compact that will be durable and give excellent quality. My wife had bought me a Sony DSC W35 for Christmas this year and on New Year's Eve she dropped it and broke the len's gears so it is scrap! I am thinking of upgrading to the new Sony DSC T200 because it does not have a lense that moves in and out and it has a door that closes over the lense. Anybody have one of these? Any recommendations? |

I have been a big fan of the Canon Powershot Digital Elph cameras for years and now all of my friends and family use em' and love 'em. I just got my Mom the SD850 last month - it's terrific. Great, stable shots, impressive battery life and even though you're probably not buying it for shooting video, the video quality is outstanding for a still camera. I have found the quality consistently good enough to always recommend the Elph without hesitation. That 720 is also a great camera, by the way. It uses AA batteries as opposed to a rechargeable Lithium-Ion pack and is bigger than the Elph - the choice between the styles largely comes down to personal preference. |

I bought my daughter an Elph (SD1000), but for my new one the top criteria were 1) greater than 3x optical zoom (3x doesn't seem to be enough while boating), 2) optical image stabilization, 3) full manual controls, and 4) at least 7MP sensor (although I consider 7MP plenty). While the A series is slightly larger than the Elph series and the styling isn't as sleek, it still fits in the palm of my hand and is quite a bit more capable IMO, with longer zooms, optical IS, and full manual controls. Both series are great cams depending on one's priorities. |

I had a great camera once. Then, one day on the dink in Block Island, it got wet. No more great cameras for me. |

Not the greatest photographer myself . My general rule of thumb 7mp and the more optical zoom the better also go with a brand that makes cameras not film. The beauty of digital photography take half a dozen shots pick the best one delete the rest. Say cheese Ardy Adelaide South Australia |

I've had two Canons and had great success with the. An SD330 and an SD680. The new models are SOOOOO much faster in taking pictures. The recovery time between shots is much faster. |

Thanks so far everyone! A must for me is the lithium ion battery option. They are awesome and hold their charge during long periods of non use. Our Kodak will sit for months and we just pick it up and go. The only bad thing is that when it dies it dies. I didn't consider the optical zoom before but it does make sense because when you are on the boat most times things are far away that you want to capture. I may have to step up to a subcompact though. I am like most of you if the camera is not with me I will either forget or not use it. I also want to be able to carry it for work. The Sony DSC T200 has 5x optical and is very compact but now I am starting to worry about the screen maybe getting broken. If I go with the DSC W55 I will have an extra battery, AC charger, cables from the broken camera but will have to deal with the protruding lens again. The choices are so great that I seem to be wasting more time researching than necessary. It would almost be cheaper to just go out and buy one then IF! I don't like it I could sell it on ebay or some other way and get another one! However, I do have inexpensive tastes (cheap) so it would kill me to "waste" money this way. Ahhh! to be care-free with money is only a dream that I wish would come true! (Lottery? Wait!!! You have to buy tickets for that??!!!) |

I hear you. I put off buying a new camera for months because I knew it would turn into a research nightmare (and it did). I finally spent most of last week knuckling down on it because the part of the school year is upon us when we've got all kinds of kid things going on, and those are must-have situations. |

I have the DSC W55 works very well, but not great pictures to say its 7mp, not a patch on my previous Fuji Finepix 3mp. My advise leave this one alone! |

Easy to use and easy to carry. A camera is no good if you don't have it with you. I prefere the rechargable batteries and buy a spare. That way you always have 1 fully charged. The ones I have for my Elph will be 5 years old this summer. |

The only thing worse than a dead battery is finding out after the fact that the memory card isn't in the camera.  I took all kinds of pictures at the Chicago Boat Show for nothing... We use a Canon Powershot for everyday use that we can just grab and go and a Digital Rebel for when we want pictures of specific things with greater zoom. Then there's always falling back on the cell phone for emergencies. |

We have a Canon EOS 1D MkII, EOS 30D and PowerShot 720 IS. Hands down we use PowerShot 720 IS far more than others. It is just convenient and takes great pictures. If you are serious about photography, SLRs are only way to go. |

I love sony's they seem to take pretty good pics. I got the warranty for 2 years from circuit city on mine and got my girlfriend the same camera so that way either of them broke they are warrantied

I use a Pentax optio w10. Takes great pictures, can fit it into a pocket, AND, most importantly for me and what I use it for, it's water- and dust-proof. Check out the optio w line, they've improved since I bought my W10, I think the current one is the W30. |
